Correct way of disconnecting the battery to security panel

We have had a power failure recently and ever since the panel shows battery trouble and it's been a few days. Thinking the battery might be bad or the power supply. What's the proper way of disconnecting the battery? I was thinking of un-plugging the wall-wart, then the negative terminal of the battery and use a volt meter to check the battery itself. Then the wall-wart itself. Any other suggestions?

If it's an older battery it's likely that it failed during the power failure. Batteries like that will typically last 3 to 5 years. I'd suggest unplugging the power supply and seeing if the battery powers the panel for more than a few minutes. If not, you probably just need to replace the battery. You can unplug it while the panel is connected to AC. I'd do the positive terminal first, but it really doesn't matter.
