Determining location of the dog

I'd like to automatically determine the location of the dog. The dog is part of my security "system", and should have free roam of the property. Or, at the least, the system should know where the dog is when the alarm is armed, and disable motion sensors accordingly.

Also, if he goes outside, I want my outdoor motion alerts to silence since he will be setting them off as he runs through the yard or around the outside of the house.

I could bypass zones manually, but that is a pain in the butt. Plus, if he goes from the garage to the yard through the dog door, then I need to know. I could put a sensor on the dog door and start from a known state (e.g. inside the garage). And when the door opens, then he's in the yard. But that is bound to get screwed up because he could poke his head through it and then go back out.

I would rather rely on the police than my dog for my security system. ie...can you just get motion detectors that support a larger dog? You mentioned that your dog sets off your motions.

I think a system like you're thinkin would be prone to not working correctly. What if someone sneaks in a window or thru the garage door while your dog is on the side yard and doesn't see them? The alarm system would think it's the dog and disarm the zone or whatever.

I think it's possible, just would be too much of a headache to implement and test to feel confident enough to trust. What if someone takes your dog and then breaks into the house? Or if they release the dog from the yard, for instance....

One way to potentially do this is via a RDIF chip and several detectors. You could chip the dog, or put one in the colar and then use some detectors to "know" where the dog it.

That being said, I think it is still a long shot to get this working reliably.

That's what first came to my mind - RFID.

Detecting RFID from a distance, though, appears to be very expensive currently. Something like a combined motion sensor and RFID reader would be ideal.

Would probably be easier to just install a big trigger button that the dog could press, then just teach him to press it if a burglar breaks in.

Maybe rather than detecting if the dog is outside, it would be easier to detect if he is not in the house with RFID, etc. Then assume he is outside.

The dog is about 100 pounds, I don't know of any petsafe detectors that are good for dogs up to that size. The Bosch Blue Line sensors I have are petsafe and he still sets them off.

As far as someone taking him or letting him out, he has actually been trained to not let that happen. I got him when I lived in a bad neighborhood, and did the appropriate training for him (and my wife so she can handle him). The dog is mostly a deterrent, but he's also there when the cops are not if he's needed.

He is chipped, so an RFID reader would work. If I mounted the readers 3 feet or so from either side of any dog door, I could reliably tell in what area he was last.

Saw a "baby tracker" on eBay for $8.99. Consisted of a small transmitter (atch to baby) and a receiver. If baby is outside of range (adjustable up to 25 meters), the receiver sets off an alarm. Don't know what it would take to hack the receiver but if you could do it, you could mount the receiver somewhere (outside?) and then monitor the status. If dog in range, he is outside. If not in range, he is inside the house.
Might be tricky to mount the receiver in a location that it only monitore one area.

Saw a "baby tracker" on eBay for $8.99. Consisted of a small transmitter (atch to baby) and a receiver. If baby is outside of range (adjustable up to 25 meters), the receiver sets off an alarm. Don't know what it would take to hack the receiver but if you could do it, you could mount the receiver somewhere (outside?) and then monitor the status. If dog in range, he is outside. If not in range, he is inside the house.
Might be tricky to mount the receiver in a location that it only monitore one area.

I thought i saw a commercial for this on tv. It actually show which direction the 'baby' was at as in left or right of where you point the devices. So if it's right you just turn right and keep turning untill it centers. I don't remember the name. I don't think that one trigger when the kid when out of range but the combination woudl be awesome. Let the devices have say 300ft range but let it trigger when the 'baby' is beyound 150ft. So when it triggers you can quickly locate it. If somebody is running of with you kid fast you still may be too late, but at least you know right away rather than spend hours looking first.

Well, you could buy the dog a cell phone and use Pluto.

Go To Texas Instruments website and search for there RFID Items. .TI. C o m They have an Evaluation Kit you can use. Ultimately you could Put the Tag on the Dogs Collar and Setup the Antennas where needed. Depending on which RFID System you decide to use, you would have as little as 1 Ant. or Many.

The Evaluation Kit (There is more than ONE) Starts out from $199. and up. I believe the UHF is the Long Range RFID which is thousands of Feet. Depending on the size of your Location, 1 Antenna, 1 RFID Chip, and the Evaluation Kit could be as little as you need.
The RFID Chip for the Collar of the dog can be as High as $100. The Antenna, You could Save money on this part if your a DIY kind of person. There is alot of DIY Antennas floating around for RFID.
It sounds like you are a DIY kind of guy so you could do theses inexpensively.... You could go to DigiKey ._C OM and check out Prices of the Long Range RFID systems...

PS. The RFID would need to be mounted to the Dog Collar because the size of the RFID would be to large to Put under the skin... You have Security Risk here if attached to the dog's collar. However if its a Guard Dog I'm Sure they would have to Take it from around its neck! Thats probably not going to happen unless they shoot it with a Dart gun with a sleeping serum of some sort or Physically harm the little guy! 'Probably not so little though'

Sounds like this would be a good app. for the new cheaper RFID,,, The ones with the signal stanght or with RSSI..
