Direct IP Monitoring

Thank you Spanky!

OK, so for the IP monitoring naysayers, how would you shoot down IP monitoring over wireless internet like WIMAX or Clearwire? Best of both worlds right? Nothing to cut, I missing something here?

nothing to shoot down... it's exactly the same thing as cellular monitoring, except we use GSM to send the data packets...

You think robberies/burglars have a cell phone jammer for real? Geez... Stop the FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt)...

Anyway, please excuse me for going a bit off-topic.

In reality, cell phone jammers are not that cheap. It will cost about $150+ for a jammer when I look in Froogle.com.

$150 is expensive? And wouldn't certain jammers knock out cell transmissions as well as wireless contact signals? I would think an experienced thief would at least cover these bases as well as cut every cable in site. Then again, I'm looking at this as an outsider new to the DIY thing. Pardon my ignorance if I'm way off base.

So is this IP monitoring? Or is it like your system is placing a call over a landline? Just wondering about the lag and being able to monitor/control your system as well as viewing video feeds from your home. Or do you have GSM monitoring just for alarms, and IP for everything else? Thanks

yes, the GSM monitoring is just for messages from the alarm to the monitoring company (which subsequently sends me emails about everything that happens at the house, so i'm always informed). I can also access the panel status via the internet (or IP if you prefer) through HS, including video feeds.

So analog over GSM? I guess for someone who hasn't purchased a cell option, wireless IP would be the way to go eh? Just seems more robust and future proof. What is your lag time between dial tone and signal sent? 10 seconds or so probably won't make a difference, but you never know I guess. Thanks.

no, no, no... it's definitely digital over GSM. Uplink has discontinued their analog module, and I think the Elk only supports the digital AnyNET anyways. Look, I know some people are worried about cell jammers. But don't you think when the technology is mature and widespread enough, someone will come out with WiMAX jammers too? Look, none of it is 100% foolproof, but cellular monitoring (as far as I can tell) takes care of 99% of the people who are likely to invade my home, i.e., crack-addicts and other small time criminals looking for a quick score who only think to cut the phone line. In fact, that's what heppened when my home was invaded last year; they only cut the phone line, but kept the cable line in-tact which was how my computer notified me of the problem.

GSM is a mature technology with an existing infrastructure, while WiMAX is still growing. All I'm saying is that for doing wireless digital communications, the two are equivalent, but cellular monitoring is mature and available today.
