One thing that you can do is to swap that keypad with one of the others and see if the problem follows the keypad. That will at least tell you if it is a hardware problem with the keypad.

Good thought.  I'll try that out.
 
In truth I'm just being finicky.  My keypads 'were' numbered 1 through 8 but are now 1,2,3,5,7,8,9,11.  It doesn't really make a whiff of difference - I could just leave it alone as it's working fine.
