Definitely a consideration for sure.

I went the other way, and didn't want the added expense of a separate HA software/service piece and wanted everything I could contained with the Elk eco-system. I very much like that my Elk runs [and is tested] as an appliance (with certifications) compared to that of a Windows server running HA software. Granted, I do have Windows servers running for other things, such as surveillance and media. YMMV.

I oinstalled an M1G in my new construction house in 2007 and love it! Bought everything I needed up front including the Ethernet interface, thermostat controllers, etc. Lately I have been expanding a bit and want to including power-line lighting controls, etc. I do have a remote barn that I added a remote XIN with power supply and monitor with no problems whatsoever.

The only challenge I had was with the RJ45 hub which I cannot add more than 4 cables to. I ended up adding the retrofit card which allows me to have multiple (3?) Daisy chains to. Works great.

It's a lot of fun!
