Elk M1 with damaged phone line....can I replace functionality with M1XSP and modem?

I lost the phone capabilities for a 2nd time on my Elk M1 after a Lightning storm. All functions correctly, except the phone dialing out for reporting and auto answer functionality. I have multiple surgesupression in the system, so I'm  not sure why this happened....again.

Since I have an extra M1XSP and a serial modem (which are pretty cheap these days), can I setup my Elk to make calls this way? I haven't looked into it yet, but I thought someone might know before I started reading.

Thanks,
Rob

Do you have an XEP?  If so, many monitoring companies support IP monitoring.

At my last place, I put in a dummy phone line and cable line next to each other.  But the phone line was really a loop of wire connected to a zone so if it was cut, the alarm was tripped.  The real phone line and cable I put in a conduit.  The thought was, if someone was going to cut it, they would pick the exposed one first and set off the alarm.

I believe there are serial connected GSM modems out there.  Not sure what the compatibility with the Elk is though.  Other people here have talked about them, so there should be some info around here somewhere.

Yes - there are Uplink models that communicate with the Elk via cellular - they provide full zone reporting and status.  It's not quite what the OP asked for, but it would likely eliminate the issue with modems getting fried.

I thought of doing the same thing on our set up. Cool!
