Elk M1XEP Question

I have a working M1 system that has a M1XEP. The install was about six months ago. I have a new Windows 8 laptop and I am trying to access the system. (The installer is a friend living 4 hours away). I can ping the M1XEP but cannot connect to the M1 from ElkRP2. If I connect directly from the lap top to the XEP with a CAT5 (regular or crossover), the LEDs on the XEP will blink indicating a connection. However, I get an error message "could not initialize a secure connection". I have opened port 2601 on the lap top and I am wired directly into the XEP.
Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

There are a couple of other threads here reporting the same thing. Port 2101 works but 2601 doesn't. I suggest you contact Elk if you want to use the secure port.

Elk told me to go to Smarthome and they didn't respond to my questions. Thanks for the port 2101 suggestion.

Wow, this whole dealing with the dealer thing on Elk's part is really starting to suck, especially for something that is pretty obviously an Elk issue. Negates one of the main reasons I chose to go with them. (Strike 2 Elk)

I had the same issue and had to use a non secure port. Windows 8 seems to have an issue with using the secure port 2601. Since switching to the non-secure connection, my Windows 8 installation had worked fine in all other respects. Hopefully ELK will do something about this issue. Windows 8 revised the networking interface in the OS. I had to upgrade my WiFi driver as part of the my upgrade from Win7.

This is nothing against Elk - they just can't support every DIYer out there... however, they do their best to respond when they can and to monitor these forums. However, since the Windows 8 issue is very well known, it would've been nice if they'd at least mentioned that.
