Anyone know much about using RCS T-Stats with the ELK, and HS?

I have several problems that I can’t figure out.

Elk Problems
1. When setting up the Elk, should the device that is connected to the RCS address 1 be thermostat 1 in the Elk?
2. What if I skip from RCS address 6 and the next address is 10?
3. What and about outdoor temperature sensors? I have an OS 21 and I am not sure that the ELK sees it. I can run windows HyperTerminal and view the raw information ( this is on RCS address 1)

Is there a way to send and receive and view the ascii information? I can unwire the Elk, and connect a RS-485 adapter and do this, but there has to be a better way.

HS problems
1. When I set up the devices using the Elk configuration setup screen, some of the labels that are in the Elk transfer to HS, while others are listed only as 1,2,3,4
2. The outdoor sensor is not displayed at all. I have tried it as a temp. probe, a t-stat, and every other setting I could find.

Now for the good part. All of this “work” on the thermostats, and I still have heat!!!!

Thermostat 1 will be M1 Thermostat 1.

The M1 does not see or display external temperature sensors connected to the Thermostat. They are for the Thermostat display only.

Skipping Thermostat addresses should not be a problem, but I have not tried it. Why not put them in order?

ELK has a program called M1_SDK.exe which displays and builds the ASCII strings for development and trouble shooting of the RS-232 data bus.

Spanky-

The reason that I am skipping the address is that I have 2 4 zone controllers and a single zone controller. On 1 controller I am using 3 out of 4 zones and the other controller I am using 2 out of 4 zones. I am planning to add the remaining zones when I get the time to run the extra wires. I figured it would be easier to just skip the unused zones for now and add them later.

As far as the OS 21 (outdoor temperature sensor) I have it connected to a RS-485 hub. It is not connected to a thermostat. So is this the ELK able to monitor this temp?

Thanks for the help

Steve

According to Elk documentation, temperature sensors can only be connected to the first 16 zones, i.e., on the main panel. I don't know if this only applies to Elk branded temp sensors or all temp sensors, but I'm fairly sure you can't just connect it to the DBH and expect the Elk to know what is going on.

As for your HS problems,
1. What Elk plug-in are you using? Is it the free Elk plug-in or the paid UltraM1 plug-in? In either case, configuration questions are typically best asked on the HS message board specific to that plug-in.
2. The problem not seeing the temp probe is probably due to the Elk not knowing what it is. When you get it correctly set up on the panel, I suspect your HS plug-in will see it too.

UpstateMike- That is how i thought it should work, but so far I can't get it to read a temp.

Delicious- The OS21 is connected to the RCS RS-485 hub not the Elk RS-485. The RCS hub is then connected to an Elk M1 XEP(I think it is the xep- the serial adapter)

Thanks

Spanky-

According to the documentation, and a monitoring program that RCS has, the outside temperature sensor should act like a t-stat.

I know that there are several people who use these os 21 with a Stargate, and it works.

any ideas?

I would hate to think that there is something that a stargate can do that the Elk can't do ;)
