I'm also using a 50 ft run of cat5 for audio (for something other than TTS) - running from a receiver in the living room to another in the bedroom. But only line-level audio is being run on that cable - two pairs are used (one each for left and right) and the other two pairs are not connected to anything. It works very well.
I think running audio and other stuff through the same cables probably depends very much on the quality of the audio signal and what the "other stuff" is.
