Elk zone issues

Hi everybody,

I started installing my M1 today and when I was finally done and turned on the power my keypad started giving me errors messages. My first issue is with output 2. I get a trouble alert. I have a siren connected to output 2. Should I connect my siren else where. Is yes I read I need to add a resistor to output 2. Does that mean one side of the resistor goes in the negative terminal and the other end of the resistor goes into the positive terminal. Sorry I'm learning as I go so could be I have stupid questions.

My 2nd issue the keypad tells me my zones are not ready but I connected everything. I don't understand this error.

Please help

Don't try to do too much at once - in fact, do as little as humanly possible at one time until you get it all working!

Yes - often if you're getting a trouble on output 2, a resistor will help - just run it between the two terminals (+/-). Out2 also needs to be set correctly (speaker/siren).

when you mention output 2 needs to be set properly, do i need to do anything else other them connecting the wires to the terminals? What do i do for my zones problem. Looks like all my zones have a problem. Do I need to make the correction using the ELK RP since no resistor are installed?

Ok now I'm confused. Does this mean I need to set up my RP before powering up the M1? I didn't hook up the Ethernet device yet. I need to install that before updating the RP account right?

When you say a resistor will solve my output 2 issue, does that mean I should be plugging my siren elsewhere also?

Sorry guys for my confusion and thanks for your help

If you remove the wires to your siren and place an EOLR where they were, it will stop the trouble for your intial system startup (do this with the panel OFF). THEN go into RP, set the siren values, save/send the config, shut down the panel and then reconnect your siren.

Or you could just deal with the siren trouble while you are opening up RP and making the changes. Not sure if you are "bench testing" but I set my panel up on a table with EOLRs in every zone (and output) just so I could connect to it and do some basic config before I even hung the panel and started wiring things to it.

An RS-232 DB-9 male-female 'straight through' cable from the main serial port on the M1 to a serial port on your computer. You can then command RP to connect via the serial port of your choosing.

I know I can buy the RS-232 online since I'm having issues to find on in the store but I would really like to solve my issues today. Can I program my zone or siren value using the keypad? If yes can I get some direction how please?

Ok so I added a resistor in output 2 and I don't get a trouble message anymore. My keypad says my zones are not ready how come

If you installed the zones without end of line resistors, the zone programming for the panel needs to be told so (they need to be set to normally open or normally closed depending on the type of contact you used)

AFAIK you can program everything through keypads that you could through RP (minus automation rules, etc). Do you have the manual? There is an excellent flow chart showing the menu possibilities and flow while using the keypad to program.

At the risk of sounding a bit cynical, I think it's time to sit down with a good book, the M1 Installation Manual. Zone configuration and how to accomplish this via a keypad is well documented.

Even with RP, I've had occasion to modify zone configuration via a keypad. e.g. I just completed changing out all of my window and door contacts (and adding the proper EOLR's). I used RP for major config changes, but used the keypad menus to change individual zone settings. I guess I was too lazy to bring the laptop along with me around the house......
