Ever such a thing as too much wire?

I Would love to pin this on the crappy receiver/speaker kit that I purchased for $300; but I was curious, it seems to be 16ga stranded wire, and i would estimate 35-40' max from receiver.

I have 0 midrange on any speaker, though, so if I lower crossover, It distorts.

Guessing cheap internet special onkyos? Or can it be too much wire for receiver?

pls note, same speakers all around, same sound all around, except for sub of course. But it sounds like i am using tweeters and no mids ;)

I really doubt it's the wire. To prove it, you could run new wire, across the floor.

All speakers wired correctly +/-?

Agreed re: wire.

I've got some pretty "bad" wire that I've wirenutted together for my sattelite speakers. Everything sounds pretty good to me. No tinny-ness.

And I've even got a system with the Optimus Prime Speakers (Rat Shack Optimus brand). Sounds good to me! Wait, maybe that line is showing that I don't have the ear some people do.

My wife and family think I"m a bit too particular...but maybe not compared to the Audiophiles on here.

Could it be the songs you are using?

I would use a test tone generator and an SPL meter to get a rough measurement of the speakers output. You could set this up pretty easily using something like REW (http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/) and run a few frequency sweeps to see what the room response is.

Have you played with any of the amp's EQ settings? You may want to try a "reset to factory defaults" and see if that has any effect.

Hope this helps,
Ken

Does the Onkyo have an Auto EQ w/Mic? What is your receivers crossover setting for the fronts? I had an Onkyo that kept auto setting the front speakers crossover to 120Hz (too high). This is on a set of speakers that play well below 80Hz, so I had to force the crossover point to 80Hz. Not sure if it was a bad mic or something with their auto eq.

Just ran this by a friend of mine and he suggested you check the receiver and see if it has a speaker size setting. The setting would most likely be large or small. This affects what percentage of output goes to speakers vs. sub and usually only affects low-bass but can also have an affect on mid range.

Hope this helps,
Ken
