Fun with iPhone, WiFi and Relays

Hey Guys,

So - I was over at someone's house today - and the wife made a comment about how annoying it is that their garage door openers don't work (this came up after I mentioned that I can open my garage doors with my iPhone through eKeypad). These are totally non-technical people - so I said it'd be easy to fix their garage door problem with an add-on. I meant I could make their homelink transmitters in the car work by adding a universal receiver and thought we were on the same page - until I went to leave a while later and she made a comment to the housekeeper that I was going to make it so she could open the garage door with her iPhone!

Well, rather than correct her, I figured what the hell - might as well have some fun here!

They'll never want something like an Elk or HAI; just very very simple and reliable automation.

So - here's the deal - it's a detached garage; there'll be no wire running - but the wifi signal should reach just fine. I have a router in there that I can open ports on, etc; I'm looking for a way I can control the 3 garage doors with nothing but an iPhone over the internet.

I did find this cool looking wifi relay: http://www.relaypros.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?...ollers_Wireless but I'm no programmer, so I figure I may want to start with an existing iPhone app and figure out the simplest relay setup I can find... I'm browsing the extensive iPhone app list on CT, but wanted to get some feelers out to see if you guys have any great ideas and/or experience to pull from.

Thx all! I'll keep researching too and see what I can come up with.

Thx AutomateIt - I'm going to email the developer and see if there's any chance of him adding 2 more inputs/outputs since it seems the hardware can do it. Still open to other options as well if anyone else had ideas!

update: I emailed the developer and got a response back within 24 hours... I asked about supporting 2-3 garage doors.

The response wasn't very specific; just said that it was in the works and to stay tuned. I think I'm going to just build it for fun and hope he comes through.
