Gate Opener Proximity Detection

Is anyone here familiar with a solution to get a swing-type gate opener to open when homeowner's car approaches? I looked around but couldnt really find any out of the box solutions. Either

Just any car? Then I'd look at a safety loop type system and locate appropriately, otherwise any device that provides a momentary short should work also.

The safety loop systems should integrate or be even on-board most gate openers.

No, not just any car. Looking for something tied to homeowners phone or some other proximity device in homeowners car (ibeacon?) to activate a relay at gate opener. I'm surprised have not been able to find anything like this.

Do you want this automated, i.e. when a car approaches the gate automatically opens?

Another reason I ask is there are many relays controlled via a keyfob (you would need to add a 12 volt coil relay and 12v wall wart) so you could just press a button when you approach.

Another cool thing that I've wanted to implement but never got around to it was use something like a flash2pass or tap2pass technologies for something like this.  (HERE are some Amazon links)

I want to say doorking has a unit that allows a phone or similar to send data to their operators and facilitate remote control. I'd have to dig to find it

Yes, customer wants it touch-free, ie drive up and the gate opens. There has to be some iphone geofencing application that can be used or a way to use an iBeacon.

Proxmity detection and geo-fencing is harder that you might think.  Lots of complications, lots of potential for failures (both ways).  What if someone doesn't have their phone, it's dead or bluetooth isn't live?  What's the backup plan for opening the gate otherwise?

That and while a number of folks here have professional skills, it's typically not geared toward commercial support.

There was some good discussion about automatic gate and garage door opening in a couple of previous threads.

Pete_c has done some good work with RFID transmitters installed in the cars that seem to offer the most reliable solution.
