GC-100 Issues

I recently purchased a used GC-100 off of eBay and am having some trouble connecting to it. I have tried the iHelp program and nothing came up, I tried resetting the gc-100 using the instructions on the global cache website and then hitting the default ip and there was no response. I think there is supposed to be a sticker with the MAC address on the bottom but it has been scraped off.
 
Anything else I should try before contacting support?

If you need the MAC ID to assign an IP addy (via ARP?) I would open the unit up and see if that ID is on the board itself.

If your router is setup for DHCP to automatically give an IP address, you could plug it in and see if it gets an IP address. Pay attention to the "new" IP so you can identify it. Once you know which device it is, your router should be able to tell you the MAC although I doubt you'll need it since you'll already know the IP of the device.

If that doesn't work, go through the list of IPs with unfamiliar device names and try to connect. That is how I figured out my wifi thermostat's IP just this past weekend.

The one I purchased on ebay came configured with an unknown static IP address that was not in my subnet mask. I just did a factory reset on the unit and was then able to get into it with the default IP address.

I had to reset my GC once, but never had any issues getting the ip to popup afterward. Did you use a flat screwdriver to reset? I tried using a bent staple once and had problems making all the connections stick while applying power. One tool I use all the time is a wifi network scanner for my droid. All the global cache devices it finds on the network are displayed as 'Global Cache.' It displays the ip address and open ports as well. Is your network range 192.168.1.XXX?

I do use DHCP but apple's admin app does not show that table of assigned ips.

I am going to try the reset procedure again before I open it up. My network range is 192.168.0.xxx

You could also try plugging the GC100 directly into your computer with a crossover cable (specially wired network cable you can get from just about any compiter store) and then use Wireshark or RARP as mentioned in the following thread. Good luck.

GC-100 documentation says the reset changes the ip to 192.168.1.70 upon reset. Thats probably your issue.

I noticed that too after you asked. I think I'll try plugging it into the computer directly and try hitting that address.

After messing around with the network config. it seems to be working.
 
Is the Eterlogic software the best for setting up the serial ports? I don't want to spend the 25$ for the 64 bit version if there is something better.

I do like the Eterlogic software, but I also use HW VSP (I prefer version 2 tho, but not sure if 2 works on 64 bit).

I am having the same problems with my GC-100 and it is a older unit so I am returning it to GC to update the firmware and getting it working agian.... It only cost $35 to do....

FYI, It is $35 flat fee for all units sent in, I think max of 10 at a time.  I had bought 5 used off of ebay, and sent all 5 in for total cost of $35.
