Hello, folks. Just joined. I'm about to start a project -- it's going to be mostly a hobby/experimental thing, but here's a few things I'd like to accomplish:

* Get the heat under control. The house has 3 zones, all heat pumps (all separate systems, no dampers). The programmable thermostats the builder installed look for any excuse they can find to turn on the aux heat. Daytime setback is 2 deg F below the evening setting? So sorry, we'll use the aux heat to recover and waste all that energy we saved during the day, and more. I want the system to anticipate based on the outdoor temp, and not use the aux heat unless it absolutely has to.
* Not have to do the nightly garage check before I go to bed. I want the system to shut off the garage lights if they are on, and lower the doors if they are up.
* Be able to control all of the outside lights from one location. We have lights in the front on two floors, lights in the back on three floors, and floodlights around the exterior. Right now you have to run all over the house to turn them all on or off.
* Manage the HVAC depending on whether I am working from home on a given day (don't have a regular schedule for when I work from home), or whether my wife and I are going to be working late, or whether or not we have house guests.
* A bunch of lighting things depending on what is going on in the house.
* Some basic security.
* Some form of audio distribution and control.
* Fire monitoring for the garage, which is currently unprotected.

The house is two years old, and we did some pre-wiring when we built it. I've been looking into this stuff for a while, and I'm getting close to buying an HAI OmniPro II, a thermostat, an outdoor temp sensor, a PIM, and a couple of UPB dimmers and switches. I'll install these in the basement rec room, which will be my lab for this. When I see how that works, I'll decide what to do next.

Welcome to the fun and games. Where in Alabama are you from. I'm in Huntsville.
Any of the automation systems will work with your list but I would recommend downloading a 30 day trial of HomeSeer since that's the system I've been using for years. It will allow you to use UPB, X10, Insteon, Z-Wave, etc all together at once.

Rupp, I'm in Huntsville too. I'll take a look at HomeSeer -- it's been a while since I list looked at it.

Just thought I I'd say hi and welcome you to CcT. I live in Guntersville, AL(close to H'ville) and have a new home with a lot of wiring , with an ELK M1 Gold in the box. Still getting organized from the move and hoping to gradually get the system set up, Wish I could be of help to you , but am total neophyte at this.
Good luck with setting up a system. I would think that being in H'ville would be an advantage .Hville is loaded with EE's and ITT guys.

Wow! I didn't realize there were that many Alabamians on this board. We're here to help so if any of you guys have any questions let us know.

Thank you.

Currently living in Enterprise near Dothan. I have OmniPro II installed and running with Gran Concerto for audio and in the process of doing lighting and security. Just order PCS 6 zone kit to give it a try if not i will go with HLC and security, thats another story, there are so many options that I don't know where to start.

Thanks for everyone great input to to this forum.

Thanks guys. Snickster, I have family who live in Gadsden, so I go through Guntersville all the time, plus my stepsister lives in Guntersville. 60pilot, I've been to Enterprise, but it's been a while. I used to go through Dothan every few months, driving back and forth to the Cape, but I'm not in the space biz right now.

Update: My OmniPro II arrived Friday, and I've spent all weekend playing with it. It's now mounted in the utility room next to where all of the low-voltage is home run. So far nothing is connected except for a console and a phone line. Got lots of experimenting ahead.
