Haiku HAI and the iPAD

When did this start happening? I've tested it here for "Atlanta, GA" and its working fine. A force quit and restart of Haiku should correct it. But that is a strange occurrence... I'll have a look at the code to see if I can find any issue.

I actually did try a force quit before, but I'll try it again. I think it started with the 3.41 update, actually. I don't recall it saying it until just recently.

*edit - no change. still doesn't work.

@mhdatx: Another way we test here is to setup a flag and a program on the controller that logs Prox Entered/Prox Exited into the Event Log and then you can see exactly when it works.

I'll give this a whirl, but I've been watching the status of the flag before and after traveling to the office and nothing has changed in either direction. Originally had the radius set much larger than that, but I've got it around 1600 now and I'll set up the event log tonight. I can't see how if the flags aren't switching how it could be working, but I'll use the logs to make sure.

Try to listen for the sound from Haiku too, just to see if it even realizes the event. It would help in diagnosing the problem if its with the flag configuration somehow. Keep in mind the phone has to be able to connect to cell towers too. I've noticed it doesn't work from a car trunk, for example.

@networkcrasher: I had the same issue when I updated to the latest version of Haiku but was still running iOS 4._. I unmounted my ipad from the wall dock, updated to iOS 5 and when I opened Haiku the weather showed up.

interesting. Just realized the same thing. I upgraded to 5 yesterday and now the weather is working. looks like it's an ios4 bug. My ipad2 is JB and still on ios4. need to check that one.

I've followed this post with great interest from the beginning. Nice work! I see this app as a method to move my OP2 from "component" status to "server" status and move my PC from server to component. IMO, the OP2 does everything "home automation" extremely well and very reliably. Unfortunately I haven't been too impressed thus far with HAI's forays into multi-media offerings - too limited, too small, too expensive. But who am I to judge? :)

Are there any plans to somehow expand Haiku into media library management? I noticed some transport controls on the screen-shots page but wasn't sure what they were controlling. Switching between apps for home automation, whole-house audio and AV control isn't pretty.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Rick

Thanks for the report guys, we're working on a fix for iOS 4.
You're welcome! Another thing (which you probably already know): When I made changes to to my system through PC Access (e.g. added zone names, configured thermostats) they would not show up on Haiku until I rebooted the iPad (which I have permanently afixed to/recessed in a wall). This was true even though in settings I had "Full State Refresh" on.

You can refresh using the button in the top right in the About tab of Haiku ;-)

Also you can also just force quit and start Haiku again instead of rebooting (but should not need to, see above).

Haiku supports all the media interfaces supported by the HAI controller. Ie. Russound, NuVo, HiFi by HAI, Xantech, Speakercraft, etc. It will also display track info if available and provided by the source.

Thanks for the quick reply. HAI does a great job of supporting the matrix switchers of the companies you list but the media management devices that must attach to them are comparatively weak: Russound - 3 streams, 320GB for $1300, HAI Music Gateway - 3 streams, 500GB for $1200, etc. Those costs are in addition to the $1200 - $2500 matrix prices. Ouch!

Thanks again and keep up the great work.

This may be a can of worms better left closed but thanks for asking. With the advent of the iPhone, iPad and iTouch it would appear that expensive, dedicated touchscreens placed throughout the home will become obsolete and since Haiku operates on these platforms independantly from 3rd party automation software products it's a must-have app for HAI owners. But since virtually everything my HAI does is automated (HVAC, Lighting, security, fire/life safety), I find that 90% of our interaction with our automation system is whole-house audio and/or AV. In both cases a good matrix switcher is required and HAI and its partners provide for that nicely as you mentioned.

What is seriously lacking in the HAI space is simple, inexpensive media management. There are endless products in the market that do this but I happen to prefer JRiver Media Center simply because it does all of it (highest quality audio, HD Video, TV, Internet Radio, photos, etc) well, is inexpensive and can be controlled via IP. Whereas having HAI speak to JRiver and retrieve metadata may be difficult, a media management add-on module for Haiku may be more doable. So if I want "A Hard Day's Night" in the kitchen, Haiku tells JRiver to play "A Hard Day's Night" on audio port 1 and Haiku tells HAI to turn on Zone 3 to Source 2.

Like I said, maybe a can of worms better left unopened but I think something like this would greatly enhance Haiku's appeal as a comprehensive home automation control platform.

Thanks for listening.

Rick
