HAI Wireless

I am almost out of discreet HAI wireless zones on my OIIe. If I were to add a z-wave controller would that allow me to use all of the extra slots I have for Z-Wave wireless devices? I am trying to avoid upgrading to a OPII to get more wireless devices going.

Zones Z2-Z10 are used for wired devices. Zones WR1-WR14 are used with wireless devices. So it looks like I have 2 wireless zones left (unless I start stacking) and 6 wired zones left.

I am using Serial 1 to connect to a UPB PIM.

I am a little unsure how Z-Wave devices fit into the mix.
Do switches take up Unit spots along side UPB switches?

Do PIMs or whatnot take up zone spots like wired devices? (That doesn't seem possible... isnt a wired zone actually a set of screws on the panel?)

I am guessing for Z-Wave I would set serial port 2 to Z-wave and plug some Zwave transmitter in there.

Z-Wave devices use up "Units" and you would not have "instant" status. You would have to setup programming that would "poll" each device and then do something based on the status.

It sounds like Zwave is definately not the way to go if UPB is an option.

I would disagree. I have Leviton RF + switches, dimmers and fan controllers and these are communicating through my Vizia RF + Plug-In Serial Interface Module with Omni IIe controller and my loads status is instant.

I tried reading the status on my Z-Wave by shutting off a light and I do not see the status in PCA. Are you doing anything in the OPIIe programmng to see Z-Wave status. I have the same Vizia RF + serial interface module plugged into my HAI OPII.

I currently have X10, Insteon, Z-Wave and UPB online. I am starting to migrate all of the X10/Insteon over to UPB.

I think it depends what type of zwave switches are being used. If you are using Vizia RF + you should not have any problems.

Currently just using Intermatic Z-Wave switches. Less now than a few months back. I only have three light Z-Wave light modules in place. I had also the Intermatic appliance modules and just removed the last one out of 3-4 of them. I understand that the Intermatic are kind of low end versus the Leviton Z-Wave.

I had used the appliance modules for my Landscaping transformers (toroidal commercial) and they kept throwing the breakers. I removed the last Z-Wave Intermatic appliance module yesterday which was originally connected to a "Malibu" 85 watt transformer. I replaced it with a smaller 150 watt toroidal transformer and an SA UPB appliance module.
