HELP It's 99 degrees!!! Wiring a Venstar 1700

I connected my Venstar 1700 this winter, and now that the temperature in DC is 90 degrees, I've found that when I turn on the A/C, the heater comes on instead - and in fact the temperature went up to 99 degrees before we figured out the problem. But what's the solution?

We have a lennox heat pump and all the wires except one are clear. Looking at the unit, here's what it says:

R (Lennox) = Power = R (Ventar)
G = Blower = G
W1 = Heat 1 = Y1
C = Common = C

But here's the problem:

The Lennox has two more wires:
Y1 (yellow wire) labelled Cool 1 on the Lennox
O (orange wire) labelled Reverse Valve on the Lennox

Every one of the wiring diagrams for the Venstar shows only ONE of these values - and indicates that it should be attached to the W1/O/B terminal.

So if I have both of these wires coming from the heat pump - what do I do?

Hello Bill,

I'd call their 1-800 number. I found their telephone support to be very, very good! I had a problem with the wiring of our two furnaces and they we're able to diagnose the problem very quickly.

I don't know that I can help much, but I can tell you that you do need to connect the reverse valve. That's what allows a heat pump to cool or heat. Different brands operate different ways, but you will either need to energize the reverse valve or not energize it to allow it to cool. Make sure that's conected to the thermostat and make sure that the thermostat is set to work with a heat pump (usually there is a jumper or a switch that you need to change)
