How to enroll Z-wave module located from from computer?

My ThinkStick is plugged into my desktop PC as I use it with software based home automation. How do I enroll modules located far from the computer? It is my understanding the ThinkStick and the module need to be located within inches of each other for the enroll.

Thanks

Deane

You either need to move the PC to the devices ie laptop or use a remote to "learn" the devices and copy these devices to the controller. The easier route is to use a controller that you can disconnect take to the devices and enroll them and then reconnect to the PC like the Z-Troller or the Z-Stick II.

Try leaving everything where it is. In my home I can hit include in Homeseer and add a device on the other end of the house without issue! I know that this isn't SUPPOSED to be the way but it works perfectly. I, too, am using a Thinkstick.

Thanks for the replies.

Rupp: I have an unused Z-Troller, and it is an outstanding device IMO, but unfortunately, my software (Elve) doesn't have support for it that I know of.

I have a laptop available. Is there a way to use that to plug the ThinkStick into temporarily to get it near the module?

Manxam: I got the idea that the ThinkStick could be used that way, but when I tried it, it didn't seem to work. I'll try it again in another location.

Appreciate the help.

Dean, I assume that you have the Thinkstick as primary controller and have a VRCOP set as secondary for use with Elve?

You can use Leviton's Vizia RF Installer tool with your thinkstick to add and remove nodes. Just install it on a laptop and voila. The version that you can currently download from Leviton's site has done away with support for the Thinkstick but if you change the download link's filename from the current version (which I believe is 1.0.5.0) to 1.0.1.0 it'll download the older version which should work for you.

The assumptions in the first paragraph are correct. Thinkstick, VRC0P, and Elve.

Just got back from traveling all day, so I'll do the download tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

I guess the question I should be asking is if Leviton has withdrawn support for the ThinkStick, what is the replacement? Do they have a new generation device? I guess I'm a bit behind on this.

Hi manxam,

Software and devices can use "full power inclusion mode". In this mode, the device will transmit its nodeinfo (announcement) signal at full strength and the computer interface will listen with full sensitivity. Historically this can work to add most devices in direct range...but won't work to add devices outside of direct range (i.e. that require repeater hops).
