How-To Setup shared folders in windows

This tutorial was made possible by skibum and TreeTop. At the conclusion of this tutorial you should be able to setup share files between two or more computers on you home network. I will demonstrate both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Enjoy!

1) Configuring Windows 2000
  • Click start_settings_Control Panel
  • In Control Panel double click "Systems"
  • Select the "Network Identification" Tab
  • Click "Properties"
  • Enter a unique name for your computer
  • Click the "Workgroup radio button"
  • Enter a name which both computers will share (i.e. MSHOME)
  • Click OK to exit "Properties"
  • Click OK to exit "Systems"
2) Configuring Windows XP
  • Click start
  • Right click on "My Computer" and click properties
  • Select the "Computer Name" Tab
  • Click "Change..."
  • Enter a unique name for "Computer Name:"
  • Enter a name which both computers will share (i.e. MSHOME) for "Workgroup:"
  • Click OK to exit "Changes"
  • Click OK to exit "Properties"
3) Setup folders to share
  • Right click on any Folder, Drive, or Printer Icon and click Sharing in the menu.
  • For Folders and Drives click the radio button that says "Share this folder" then click OK
  • For printers click the radio button that says "Shared As" and click OK

4) View folders from remote PC
  • Click the "My Network Places" icon from your desktop
  • Click the "Entire Network" icon
  • Click the name of the computer you want to view shared folders from (Be patient it take a minute for the computer names to show up for the first time)
  • Click the folder you wish to view
