Idea's for Samsung Q1

"Wouldn't a USB_UIRT and an IR distribution hub/block with emitters be a better long term solution over the USBIR6 if you were planning on adding to the system in the future? (such as adding ABUS or even a global cache)"

No, not really. The USBIR6 adds more discrete zone outputs. You can still use these outputs via a IR distribution hub / block, but now you can make it multizone capable.

Example: You own a bar that has 30 same brand / model LCD TVs. You have 6 seperate sitting areas. You can connect all 30 to a 6 zone IR Network (via Xantech or other) and change the channel / volume for all 5 TVs at once, for one of the sitting areas. And NOT change the channel / volume on the other 5 sitting areas. If these same brand / model LCD TVs could be programmed to "hear" a different set of IR commands (seperate from the LCDs in the other 5 sitting areas), then you could run all 30 TVs off a single USB_UIRT zone. But, that is unlikely that the LCD supports that customization of IR. Some devices have an A and B set, but not A,B,C,D,E and F sets.

BSR, Yes, that is correct. (other than that it's really $220 ;) )

Frunple: boot time for Q1: Nothing "special". typical Windows boot time on a 1ghz CPU. The bios takes a couple of seconds, but that's about it.
Right... IF you were hooking up more than one component that used the same IR codes.

Yes, that is one of the advantages of multizone. Other advantages is restricting control of a device to only certain locations. For example, not allowing the kids to change channel on the parents cable box from the kids bedroom - even if they have a remote control programmed for the parents cable box.

What's nice about the software side of this, is you can put those permissions in place also from the command processing side. ie: "hear a command", decide if the right conditions are set to process the command, Send the command to the device if the rules says tha's ok to do.

What zoning does is if the receivers and emitters are on the same zone, you can't isolate like this. All hear what is sent. When you have multizone, you can "Steer" the command to the right zone via software and conditional logic.

But, the number one reason people purchase the USBIR6, is because it is a clean installation. No boxes to figure out where to mount. Our dealers like that because they do a rough install of the IR network, and then after final inspect, bring the Server Controller in and just plug in the mini jacks into the PC in the Rack. Boot up, and Test. Nice.
