Indoor cctv camera... creepy?

I received a new ip cam and was trying to figure out where to put it. Then it hit me: The family room. My reasoning: From there I can see the backdoor slider, stairs to second story (which both my wife and I have had the pleasure of falling down), the hallway to the living room, not to mention I could see if the tv was left on, etc... Seemed great... or so I thought! My wife was  supremely creeped out by it and said she felt violated. My mother in law saw it and refuses to visit until it is down. The fallout was amazing. What are your thoughts on indoor cameras? Poll time!

SPECTACULAR!!!

Mine only records inside when the Elk tells it we are "Armed Away". I do this via Blue Iris.

I've been debating this too. I would like to be able to check the inside of the house when I'm not there, or be able to record someone inside the house, but I do find it a bit creepy.

If you need to get WAF approval, then simply wire some type of buzzer that will come on with the camera power.  That way you can also power remotely and everyone will know if it is on (the 'creepy' part is not knowing when it's on and being viewed/recorded). ;)

I've only purposely setup indoor cameras for when I'm gone on vacation. It would be weird having them otherwise.

I've inadvertently setup cameras that could see indoors by pointing and indoor camera out a window. As soon as it becomes darker outside than inside, the window effectively becomes a mirror and the camera can see the room. This turned out to cause a fair bit of trouble as the camera was installed in the guest bedroom and I'd have to power it off whenever there was a guest and then power it on when the guest left. I suppose I could have devised some kind of shield to prevent the camera from seeing inside, but I never took the initiative to do it.

It's somewhat understandable, and personally, IP cameras are becoming more of a target to people snooping the neighborhood wifi networks, so I have my hesitation as well.

From what I have heard, most wives do consider this a violation of their privacy/space.  Wiring the camera so it only works when the alarm panel is armed is an acceptable alternative IMO, but I still wouldn't point it at any personal spaces, such as living rooms or bedrooms.

My touch screen has a camera in its frame, but once the wife expressed her feelings about this camera, I killed the driver, showing her that it can't be used.  In the end, if your spouse isn't happy, you really don't have any options.

When I first suggested it, it didn't go over well to say the least. After having it for a little while, it becomes a necessity almost.
Same thing with my brother and his wife. Completely against it before she used it, now she uses them more than he does.
They will all love the ability to look in at any time.

I have two indoors.  One situated to capture people entering the front door and the other pretty much just to watch the dogs (for the wife).
I think the key like others have said is where you put them.  They are not positioned to monitor bedrooms or family room so its not really invasive.

I have ten cameras. Seven are outside, one is in the garage, and I have a camera in the attic, just to monitor equipment up there. The outside cams all record on motion all the time. The garage and family room only record on motion when alarm is in away mode. You can see the cam in the Family Room, but it doesn't bother anyone, since it just records "public" areas.

I put outdoor then i put indoor and girlfriend did not like, but her son is handicap and now she loves them. She can check on son with sound from phone. If the camera goes down(cant see in house)she calls me right up to let me know they r down.

I even put camears in my parents house because my father has alzheimer's and i can keep watch.Mother likes it father no, but he forgets they are there.

My view was similar to that of KevinL.

I am still having a hard time seeing what the big deal is, especially if it is not recording when we are home. In any event I took it down. This thread was very insightful.

We have one indoor camera currently and it is located in the "play room" to monitor the kids.  I am not recording the stream at this time either.  While we love it and everyone that sees the entire automation system likes that feature, I definitely can see where people would find it creepy if you had cameras in "normal" parts of the house.  If I added more cameras indoors, they would have a specific purpose (like the playroom camera does).  If that specific purpose is security, then I would only record on motion when the alarm is armed and I would probably limit the locations to entrances and hallways where people are going to have to walk through to get to certain parts of the house.  That way you would be pretty much guaranteed to capture the images of a robber, but not infringe on the people living in the house.

Just my 2 cents.

We use the babycams to watch the kids when they're upstairs, and the wife has no problem with me wiring those up to be able to pull up on any TV in the house; when we have guests over, all the kids go up to their rooms but they're just too young to be totally unsupervised.

As for the rest of the house - if we leave for an extended period, I have PTZ cameras I set out; but the only way I could install something permanently is if it was out of sight and barely visible, and the power was cut any time the alarm is disarmed (and wife would need to be able to verify).
