Insteon SDM + 2413UH PLM

I've been a HouseLinc2 user for about 6 months, primarily for programming scenes directly into my Insteon devices (never for events, etc). My Christmas/New Years project is to finish up the more advanced automation tasks that take a more "intelligent" controller. I've wanted to try Premise before purchasing a more modern version, but have not been able to get the Insteon MiniBroker running.

My issue is specifically with the Smarthome SDM (v308, as included in the MiniBroker). No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the SDM to communicate with the PLM. I've manually setting the port, forcing a connection, and reloading the new PLM program, but can never get the SDM to connect to the PLC (HouseLinc is closed during this operation). If I close SDM and open HouseLinc, I have no issues communicating with the PLM.

Has anyone had success getting the 2413UH communicating with SDM (and ultimately Premise)?

Yes. Absolutely. John's driver is pretty solid, once you get the pieces together. V3.08 works. I'm trying to recall the steps - if you look at some of my earlier posts, you'll see I had problems, as well. (I might describe the steps I took to fix it - I just don't recall...) None of my problems were due to the driver; John did a phenomenal job in helping me out...Need to know - what O/S; Did you follow the install steps exactly? Are you seeing the Smarthome process running in the task manager? Did you set up the name and password correctly? Port open? Windows Firewall open? UAC set correctly?

I'll think thru some things - I don't currently have the Insteon devices set-up (I just moved into my new mansion....yeah, right!) and see if I can recall....

SDM3 is only used for the 2414U, 2414S and 2814U PLCs.

The 2412S, 2412SH, 2412U, 2412UH, 2413S, 2413U, 2413UH and 2413SH PLMs do not use SDM3 and have a completely different communications protocol.

I think the PLM might work with Premise if it was connected through an ELK M1. You can try Open source automation http://www.opensourceautomation.com or just do the demo of CQC or Elve, CQC has a 40 day demo and if you watch the video tutorials the setup is not too bad.

While Premise has lots of great features it is lacking drivers for a lot of newer stuff, it is a shame really, if Premise were still being developed today I believe it would be the perfect H/A program.

I agree, sorta, on Premise's support for newer stuff...I've seen a number of these companies come and go over the years; some had an extensive number of drivers, solid performance, Linux-based (isn't that supposed to solve all problems?), and on and on...If you look at the SW market overall, there is so much momentum on the open source side of SW development that there isn't a reason for Premise not to fit into it. (original base Premise aside....) As my development skills increase, I am more excited by what this SW can do and have done with it....

Maybe Motorola will open up the core someday...(Or did Google pick it up?)

If you have the right hardware or know how to write new drivers, Premise is a great option. The O.P. has unsupported hardware so I recommended an Open source program that I believe supports the PLM.

The O.P.also mentioned buying a more modern program in the future so I recommended trying Elve or using the CQC 40 day trial to get a feel for the program, 40 days should give you plenty of time to see if you like the software. CQC is an excellent program with lots of supported hardware, I played with Elve a little but not as much as CQC so I am not sure what the differences are in hardware support. Homeseer is another one with tons of newer hardware support, including PLM and ISY-99i for Insteon.

I don't see Motorola ever doing anything as far as releasing the source code but you and many others have contributed greatly to extending the capabilities of Premise.
