Is it possible to get a key that's stamped "Do not duplicate"?

Maybe having it say that on the key is enough to prevent most people from even trying to get them duplicated....

Ya, and depending on who exactly this person is, you might also have the affect of handing them a key that says "Dont' duplicate this key, we don't trust them!"

Or buy a cheap, new lockset for the front door from HD/Lowes and temporarily replace the front door lock. In effect, you've rekeyed it.

Give the guest a copy and make copies for the family. At the end of the visit, replace your original front door lock and everyone goes back to using the old key.

Of course, I like the electric strike with exterior keypads or prox readers because I already use those. :)

Well, go the IVB route...just calmly explain to your wife that while you're absolutely not concerned about this guest, it would probably be a good idea to make some small upgrades to the house security system, and then show her the shipping list of what's already on the way...

oh, and then a couple monthes later, sell it to me at a good discount!

Pretty accurate on all fronts. :)

I think the easiest, and cheapest way is to just change a single lock on a side door, or even the front door. Maybe just the door handle OR the deadbolt. Which every one you change, just use one of the keys for yourself, and give one to your guest. When the guest leaves, just put your original lock back into place.

Very simple, 10 minutes work, and probably only around $20 for the lock.

This way the guest never gets a "main" key, and you never have to worry when they leave about having made copies.

Hi,

As other have pointed out, a DND key is not really any form of security - I think what you are really looking for is a restricted key - This involves replacing your keys and lock barrels with a system that is patent protected. In theory this provides better security because the blanks are only made available to locksmiths who agree to "play by the rules".

Re-keying before/after the visit will definitely be cheaper than re-keying with a restricted key system. And an electronic lock is much more CocoonTech.

Just like almost everyone else, I'm not going to answer your question "can I get a d-n-d key", but give an alternative that eliminates the need.

Have you considered installing one biometric lock (Weiser POWERscan or equivalent). Then your guest never needs a key at all, and you can easily remove him/her. We're planning to do this because that way our kids don't need a key at all, and if we forget one we can still get in.

Do you mean SMARTscan? They have the SMARTscan and POWERbolt. If you are referring to the biometric SMARTscan, I would have a look at this thread. As usual though, YMMV.
