Is the new(er) Elk ELK-M1XRFTW compatible with GE sensors?

No, the M1XRFTW is not compatible with the GE sensors..  Each wireless receiver only works with the specific
type of wireless device it is designed for.

You need a M1XRFTW to interface with ELK sensors, a M1XRFEG if you want to use GE devices,
or a M1XRF2H for Honeywell devices.

I believe you can connect multiple types of receivers to the same M1 if you want to have a mix of brands on
your system.

You can have multiple receivers attached to the system with the caveat of where the "starting" zone is vs. the total number of zones. Best way to see it is to get the install documents and look them over.

Once you address the receiver and zones, even if you don't use them, they're predisposed.

DEL - perhaps you can clarify something.

My understanding of the M1XRFTW is that although it can handle up to 144 wireless zones, you do not have to use all of them.  Thus, if you have the M!XRFTW set for data bus address 2 and want to use just 16 wireless zones with it (i.e zones 17 through 32), you could then install a M1XIN or even an M1XRFEG at data bus address 3 and use zones 33 on up.   If you ever wanted to later expand to more than 16 zones on the M1XRFTW, you'd have a lot of reconfiguration work to do.

Do I have this right, or am I missing something?

That is right.  A suggestion to eliminate future zone reconfiguration is to configure all wireless zones fron zone 17 up and all wired zoned starting at the highest possible address growing down.
