Lighting control ELKM1PCSPIM

I recently purchased the ELKM1 PCSPIM and a bunch of Simply Automated UPB Transceivers. I installed one switch and I am realizing that I cannot configure all of this with the Elk alone. Is this correct? I don't know why I thought I would be able to. Do I need to comfigure my devices seperately with Upstart? I guess I need to buy a CIM also? Am I on the right track?

Yes I think you do. Once you get the specific ID of the switch I think then you enter it into the M1. If I can ever get my system working, Ill be in the same boat, so I am also interested.

Thanks. Everyone is so helpful here. I know I'll be up and running soon. If I find out something from another source I'll keep you posted.

Yes, with the Elk you need to configure all your switches with UpStart first, then put their info into the M1 to use for control purposes. Since you got the all in one XSP and PIM I don't think you can use it as a standalone PIM so you need to get another PIM/CIM for programming. I usually recommend 2 anyway since its much more convenient.

Not without a signal meter, but its recommended for all installs. But of course if you have problems, you can always add one later, even a plug in one in your dryer outlet.

Depending on what brand you're going with, there's a great deal with the Simply Automated DKIT01 - if you talk to AutomatedOutlet, they'll include the CIM and the Phase coupler - you just specify which of each you want (USB/Serial and Wire In/Plug In/Breaker Panel Mount). When you look at the price, it's basically the cost of the 3 switches; it's like the other two are free.

Probably not unless the plug pattern is the same; but they have breaker-panel mount which is the best case scenario if you have two spaces open in your panel (it's 2nd easiest - behind the plug-in, and it's closest to the source so it should work best)... if not, there are ways to do the wire-in - but they're a little more work... and if you don't create a dedicated circuit (ie piggyback your 20amp dryer) it'll work fine, but not quite be up to code.

 Well hell, I didn't know that. Elk's PCSPIM page doesn't say squat about requiring a separate PIM and software to set it up. I just finished my basic M1 install recently and just tonight busted the PCSPIM out of the box to start installing that. I'm pretty ticked. Everything I read for the last several months made it sound like I could install the switches, enroll the PCSPIM into the databus, and be good to go. I guess I'm gonna send the sucker back and get a regular PIM and a XSP.

For what it's worth, you may like having a separate one for enrolling vs. for the elk. It's a PITA to go swap around the cables for just a quick change - like lighting level or scene control.

I actually have 3 CIM's - one for Elve, one for programming, and one for the Elk.
