M1 with AC Failure message

Hi all,

Has someone else come across this problem or have a suggestion that may help.
After powering up my M1 system for initial setup I continue to receive this message scroll over & over First - Inside temp, Area 1, & then AC Failure.
Tried turning the system on without AC connected just battery same message.

Initially only the status led flashed & no power led .After changing the AC polarity I now have both Power LED lit up
& Status LED flashing & the AC Failure shows up once only when turned on. Is this error stored in the memory and can be erased?
Or does a fault still exists somewhere?

Nah samething . If I turn the system off and back on again it still shows up on the display, only once.

Let's get the obvious out of the way, did you measure the AC voltage to the Elk terminals?

FYI AC has no polarity so whatever change you noticed when you swapped the cables around would have been from switching the system off and on again.

Still can not help you on the AC Failure error message.

I feel I eliminated the obvious possible causes AC Voltage reads 16.15V, battery fine.

I understand what you’re saying in regards to polarity with the AC as nowhere in the manual does it state
there’s a right or a wrong way to connect.

In saying that I have tested the system numerous times & the Power LED will only light up
when connected in one particular way.
This is why I chose to mention it as it could be the source of the problem

I would create a temporary configuration file with NO RULES. Try to get it DL into the M1G and see if that solves your problem. I'm assuming you have a rule that announces your inside temperature.

No I dont believe any rules are set . And the only temp read out coming from the Keypad sensor.

I think I would hang around and solve this condition, something is surely wrong here if swapping AC lines gives different results.

I don't know if it could have any effect, but the ground connection at the transformer is not connected, right?
Is the outlet wiring new or old?
Is it possible there is a cross wire to the receptacle?

Hi there

The power supply is new it's a Ness power pack they package with there M1G systems here in Oz.
So cant see that being a problem.

But if there is a risk I may damage the system I will cease testing it until a solution is found.

I agree with Jensen Beach swapping AC connections around should see no change in condition.

Maybe Brave Sir Robin could relocate this thread into the ELK Product section to get more some focussed ELK users involved.

I am using the same power supply that James has here in Oz without any issue. I am currently running local Ness 5.1.20 firmware in the system Ness has recently released a 5.1.22 version which and I quote Ness here

"Due to new Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) Regulations in Australia, M1-G panels are now supplied with a high efficiency DC power supply instead of an AC transformer.
This update is required for the controller to operate with the DC power supply. "

I have not needed to up issue to 5.1.22 as I have AC so I am wondering if the US version has a similiar version firmware now in the US and James might having only just bought his M1 has the AC/DC firmware and there is bug. Just a thought......I can't see what ELK are doing with firmware other that what is posted on Cocoontech.

I personally don't think James has damaged as the system appears to be working apart from the error message. I would connect RP up and start experiment configuring the system, check the status within RP and start getting some other data happening. This may all make sense with some other info.

Also James the keypad has some diagnositics that you can go and interogate, DC voltage levels etc etc. I assume you must have a KP1 keypad as you mention temperature error too. Not sure if the temp error is another clue or not but you should be getting that either.

The screwy thing that is throwing me is the fact you can swap the AC input terminals and get different results....that is weird very weird :nutz:

Under different circumstances I would have suggested taking it back to your supplier for them to check out, swap out or arrange to have repaired. That may still be you only option.

If it is a new PS, then maybe it is a DC version (as Fleetz indicates). Check your firmware is up to date to support DC supplies and double check you had your DVM on AC and not DC. Also confirm this with the writing on the TX itself.

I'll have to think about this again, but for the moment, I can't see the ELK board accepting either an AC or DC input. Seems like the main board would/should not have the bridge diodes and dampening circuitry.

I think, even if you had a DC input into a bridge, you could still hook it up either way

Hi Jensen,

I thought the same and went and had a look at the M1 and it appears that ELK use a switch mode power supply I could not see a bridge which would as you correctly stated would allow AC or DC to be connected. So ELK must be doing something tricky on the switch mode supply to no allow for AC or DC to be connected with version 5.1.22 firmware. Of course the M1 also monitors the input voltage to enable for reporting, error messages and restorals, they need to do the same no if there is a DC supply connected.
