master hub burning out ac adapters

my hobbyboards master hub has worked great... I did not buy the power adapter from hobbyboards.com .... I got it at kmart...
well it burnt up.... started melting....

so I bought another one from kmart a different model .... it is adjustable to 12v...

well I just realized my temps stopped working...

well guess what this power adapter is not working... red led is out....
and the plastic is a bit warped..

has anyone ever seen this?

second adapter???? I thought maybe the first was bad... but now 2......

I believe it was 300ma... and I remember emailing hb and they said it would be ok.. I do notice theirs is 1000ma... could that matter? over drawing and burning it up?
I only have 6 18s20's now... and going to go to 20 of them...

That's what I was thinking, but I could be wrong. Are you using parasite power?

Also, Check and see if you have a positive center tip.

How long did the adapter take to melt? I just set my hub up this weekend with an adapter from http://www.mcmaster.com - 12V, 500mA

all of mine are ds18s20 so id say no to par....

took ohh... 8 months....

What I have going on is this...

from hub to first sensor.... first sensor.. I actually have a phone wall plate... in the back I jumped the pins for the 2 outside pins... thus gnd and power.... so really I have 2 wires running to the wall plate... white/blue and blue..

blue is data
white/blue shorted together for power and ground.... has been working for a long time......

radioshack has a 13.5 / 30v - 1000ma.... may pick that up

ok they dont have it on their website.. but I bought...

12V DC - 1500ma!!!!! so should be good now!!!!!!

It's 12-24VDC 500mA

Ok so now I am an impatient youngin (if ya consider 35 young.. HAH) but I have patience of nil....


after sitting at my sons soccer practice tonight.. I thought about it... my first adapter went on me and it was one of the ones with the multi plugs attached.... I remembered the 9v adapter type plug was hot when I unplugged it.. the hobbyboards hub was on my server.. ml570g2 metal case... so I think that was my problem...

my next one went bad.. it is totally dead.. the red light isnt even on the power adapter.... so I plugged my new one in....
there is no extra dongles attached to it... just the right connector...
so I plugged power in and the power light on the hub flashed then went out... I then played around with it a bit... unplugged all the cat5 cables and the power light came on..... so I plugged 1 of the 2 back in and it was ok... plugged in the second and the power went out again... so I left it unplugged as I had to go to soccer...

just came home and looked..... the second cat5 was my testbed... it is a cat5 with a ds18s20 just crappily wired in... and a pair of vice grips holding it together.. well it seems my wife knocked it off the shelf and was sitting on my server!!!! ONCE AGAIN !!! METAL!!!!!!!!!!

so there is the reason why my adapters burnt up!!!!!!
oh well I know better now....

Ya know, with your luck you may want to consider putting in an in-line fuse near the wall wart.

That's a really good idea. I have a 1wire rj45 jack for on my rack for testing that gets its +5 and +12 power from the Win2K server. One day I pushed something out of the way I was working on and created a dead short on +12. The cat5 started melting and the plug and jack started smoking. By the time I realized what was happening the server crashed. And it wouldn't power up again. Luckily it must have been a thermal shutdown in the power supply because an hour or so later it started up again. Lesson learned - there's a couple of inline fuses in my test setup.
