Max corrent on +5V of master hub/8 ch I/O

I have a 12V supply to the Master hub which then powers a 8 channel I/O board. I "accidentally" shunted one of the 5V pins on an output to ground. I was wondering how much current this pin would be able to deliver. Judging by the temperature of the on-board voltage regulators it is quite a bit.

the I/O board is working well afterwards. The external circuitry is not ...

The LM78M05 regulator IC is 5 Volt at 1/2 amp [500MA].
It is internally protected from output shorts but will get very warm in the current limiting condition.
External components as you have found. May not fair as well with a short circuit.
