Migrating wife to an online "Family Calendar"

MainLobby supports 2 way integration with Outlook. The family calendar can be maintained from the native Outlook app or from the MainLobby touchscreen.

heh, it's been a while since we had a completely random mention of MainLobby in a thread where it didn't really belong. I feel like i'm in a Monty Python skit; A-fish, a-fish, a-fish, a-fishy, Oh! Ooooh, fishy, fishy, fishy, fish!

"Have any of you migrated to a fully online family calendar? Doesn't have to be integrated with CQC, hell i'd be happy with a generic MSN account/google calendar. Any lessons learned? "

And how is the MainLobby post not related to the OP's (your) request for info?

That is how MainLobby does it. Is there interest in doing same in CQC? If so, maybe we can do something about that.

but can ML sync this calender with a ppc or iphone? in this case I beleive the OP's best soloution seeing he already has those devices is to use a google calander (BTW I tried the google sync lastnight and I see why it is still beta :) sent feedback to them) with CQC I thik he can also display the web interface on his TS and edit/maintain the calender from any web browser, TS (CQC using web interface/plugin), Mobile phone while away from home over internet connection.

I use Rainlendar (free portable app). It supports multiple calendars, to do list, and more, plus I believe the pay version ($12 or so) supports syncing with google. Runs on multiple platforms as well. I have been using it for many months now, and couldn't be happier.

I'm pretty sure someone wrote an add-in as well for SageTV that can bring down google calendar information. Not sure how robust it is, but I know it is out there.

"but can ML sync this calender with a ppc or iphone?"

If Outlook can...then MainLobby view will be in synch with what is on a ppc or iPhone.

Which the answer is "Yes" to both.

MainLobby user interface <> MainLobby server <> TCP connection <> MLOutlook Addin (running on Outlook PC) <> Outlook <> iTunes <> iPhone

Personally, I am becoming more and more of a fan of the "cloud". I like that I don't have to connect to something to sync manually, and that I can view both my email and calendar (and photo albums, etc.) without being tied to a specific installation of software on one PC.

Not knocking ML, as from all accounts it seems to be a great progam (never used it myself), just not my approach to personal communication. But that is simply my humble opinion. And why I went the Google calendar route.

One of the last holdouts in the home automation realm is our "family calendar". For some ungodly reason, the wife prefers a big-ass desk calendar that we have to maintain, and god forbid both of us schedule something without writing it down - we end up with TONS of conflicting RSVP's or none at all. This generates other problems too, namely we don't know what is scheduled until we go homeetc.

Dude, don't take it so personally - i'm just harassing you about the continual mentions of ML in threads where it's not relevant :) . The premise, Girder, or CQC folks didn't post about integration with HA, and that's not the point of my thread. Read it again - I don't give a crap about integration with HA software, my issue is that:
A) She prefers paper
B) We don't know what's scheduled until we go home
C) Doesn't have to be integrated (hence why this is in the wiring closet forum and not in the HA Forum)

I didn't actually know Google could sync with mobile phones; i tried last night with my wife's Samsung Blackjack, but god damn that phone is hard to use. She's been itching to get an iPhone anyway, so if google mobile syncs with that it could be the ticket. Plus the other post about how I could use multiple google calendars to prevent my work appts from mucking up her PDA calendar could help.

She is being a good sport - I typed all the stuff into Google Calendar last night (used her email address for the account so it's easy for her to remember), and she's willing to attempt it. But I *really* need to figure out that phone bit or else this'll be the shortest experiment ever.

can users sync when they're not home?

I use google sync, google calendar, and my blackberry. However, my wife does not have a data plan on her work phone. So she just puts it all in a notebook calendar. I probably should try and get her synced with my calendar.

Thank You that was my exact point that with a google calender (which seems to be the most used here) users can sync their mobile or use a internet connection and log into the web interface to change or look at appointments from anywhere, with outlook you are limited to the devices you have sync'd and to the time at which you sync'd the device.

So with ML(or any other) -> outlook intergration I would be limited and cant see if my wife made a change until I and her before me, and then her again incase I made changes... re sync which I cant do until I get home.

So I see google or exchange mail servers I see as the most useful options.

Can Gcal be placed on an intranet page to view and edit without having to log into it? For instance, home intranet page pops up when opening browser and the calendar is already open with the days appts. I to am trying to get my wife more organized by moving away from her calendar hidden on the pantry door to where we both can access it from home and work. So, trying to make it easier for her to just open up firefox and bam it's there for her to view would be ideal...she won't take the time to open google, log in and view/edit.

Eric

I dont think so Eric unless you make it a public calendar, which I wouldnt want. But you could just have a google account for your calendar and save the password in firefox I guess. I wouldnt use my day to day google account with a stored password though, just in case.....
