Howdy howdy. I'm in the market for a house/condo sometime in the next year and am planning on doing a fairly serious HA build as DIY as possible. I'm fairly unknowledgable on the area, but have pretty extensive in computers/IT in general so I'm hoping to spend the next year building a knowledge base which will allow me to plan out and build a pretty nice set up. I'll be poking around for now, once I learn more I will post up a build thread.

Welcome to CT

Be sure to check out the wiring your new home links in my signature. And poke around alot... we were all a newbie once, and asked alot of questions so answers are here, if you cant find them after searching a bit you can post (you wont get you head bitten off.... just please search first :) ) or join us in the CT chat room.... links in the page header, usually a few people hanging out with different setups and technologies. I recommend the blog for your build up thread, again the link is in the page header...

here is another great place to get started. http://www.cocoontech.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13814

Welcome! Set very specific goals, with deadlines, for your planning. Unless you stay focused, you'll go nuts thinking of all the cool things that could be possible. It's called 'scope creep'.

Take notes while you search and read, about what you'd like to do eventually.

Most high-level HA users use a whole-house control system, usually PC-based. Popular choices include CQC, HomeSeer, Premise, J9. HAI OPII and the Elk M1 are security systems that offer a lot of automation choices, and can be married to a whole-house controller.

I can see how I could get sucked into "scope creep". I'm in process of working up some sort of plan. I'm looking at the different software packages, I hope to demo them in the coming month or so. I'm sure I'll be back with intelligent questions soon enough. And of course I'll search first :-P nothing worse then a n00bie asking n00b questions that are easily searchable....
