Just a quick note, OpenHAB 1.3 has been released. I discovered openHAB a little less than a year ago, and the rate at which it has grown has been phenomenal! I started into HA over 10 years ago and have kicked the tires in several platforms over the years, but always seemed to stick with my good Ol' Housebot when it came down to cost & flexibility. Well OpenHAb has changed all that with my platform of choice, and I don't think there is anything that comes close to it in the open source HA world.
OpenHAB is becoming part of Eclipse... which is a huge community of java. And it author is speaking at JavaOne conference late this month.
