Phone surge arrestor with fiber?

I have Verizon fios for my phone service. Therefore, I have fiber coming to the side of my house which provides broadband, tv and phone services.

Do I still need a phone surge arrestor on the telephone line?

Well, you're certainly protected against lighting surges coming in over the phone line from outside the house; however, if you have the phones routed throughout the house and lightning were to somehow get to any of those lines, the surge would then travel throughout the house.

The lazy part of me wouldn't bother, but if you are plugging specifically into an alarm panel then it certainly wouldn't hurt anything to have it. It's far less likely to happen now, but hell, anything is possible.

IMHO. In short, no you do not need one. If there is a lightening hit close enough to affect your internal phone lines then the devices connected to your phone lines are the least of your worries. It wouldn't hurt but might be a waste of money. You'd be better off putting a surge protector or a UPS on the FIOS power.

Totally off topic, when we canceled Comcast after years of price gouging for internet that we did use and TV that we didn't the girl on the phone in their retentions department couldn't understand my comment about how fiber to the home was a superior technology for this reason (lack of surges being carried into the house) and many others. She replied "We have and use fiber optics in our Comcast network too." I told her that she obviously has no idea of what the diffeences are and she should probably focus her time on keeping someone that doesn't have a clue either...
