Rackable Systems Dual Opteron 2.0GHz 4GB 120GB 1U Half-Depth Server w/VID LAN $200 (refurb)

I think they need a better person writing the adds for them...

The 1U server chassis is about half the size of a standard server chassis so you can stack machines back to back in a cabinet and effectively double the number of servers in the same footprint!

lets put the fans so the heat from one blows right into the second one....

but it does look like a good deal though

 good point. Definitely a good deal, and if I wasn't busy trying to fix a few other things, I would jump on this deal.

1U rack mount servers are usually noisy beasts. Looking at the 4 small fans at the back, this one is probably no exception. Not sure suitable it would be for home use.

Yes, I keep looking at these type of 1u servers and figure they would be perfect to stick in a rack in my central closet. How much noise are we talking about here? My central closet will be closed, but there will be a vent near the top of one wall to use as heat exhaust.

Every time I have seen these units come up in discussion, several people warn that they sound like jet-engine components.

Depends on the quality and quantity of fans and if it is an open rack or an enclosure. My Sage server sounds like a jet is taking off but my CCTV DVRs are not quiet but not nearly as loud. I bought an enclosure but haven't installed it yet. In a closed closet it's really not a big deal alot probably on par with a refrigerator. In an enclosure inside a closed closet I doubt it would be noticable unless you have a bunch.

I have also been swapping to little valley systems for basic functions, these need far less cooling and could get by with the 1 120mm for the HDDs and 1 80mm PS fan. make those two ball bearing and speed controlled and you can get almost if not silent.

1U you are kinda hosed but 4U is basically a plain big ATX desktop case with ears and handles, its no louder or quieter then any other equal PC.

Interesting - any recommendations on where to get rack-mount cases for regular PC's?

AceCannon,
Just search NewEgg or just about any other larger PC ecommerce dealer for "Servers" "Cases", "Rack" and you will find tons of variations.

I like Silverstone cases as they look nice, aren't very expensive, made well, and can be either a desktop HTPC type or add rack ears for Rack mount.
