if you are talking about a standard irrigation rain sensor. I have had no false trips here with mine. it is a piece of cork that needs to get wet and expand to press the switch. and the distance(amount of moisture and cork expandion) is usually adjustable
I have a Rain-Bird sensor similiar to the one mentioned above. I just connected to my HA stuff. It was installed by the sprinkler installation company and I disconnected it when I went to using the Rain-8. I connected it via a DS10a to get some more feedback regarding rain for my sprinkler system. I currently utilize the rain bucket for rain measurements.
I have not had a chance yet to adjust it. It is currently only triggering with some major rain and staying in the on position long after the rain stops. It is mounted on the second floor gutter and not easy to get to.
I also purchased a leaf wetness sensor from HB. I am hoping to get a better variable of rain on or off using the three sensors.

It will stay on until the cork drys out. this is usually used so the system doesnt water the lawn right after the rain has had a chance to soak in.. depending on the weather I would expect a good amount of time (4-8 hrs) depending on the amount of rain, and the temp/humidity where you are
I've been just monitoring the closure of the switch during rain fall and was wondering about it. Depending on the amount of rain I have noticed it on for almost 12 hours after a good rain. I have never attempted though to look at it up close or adjust it yet (its been there about 5 years and I just connected it a couple of months ago).
