I had some issues with my AC at the end of last summer, a little leak, no big deal. When the guy came back to check it out a couple weeks ago, he mentioned that our furnace had some sort of recall and should probably be replaced. He suggested a couple Goodman options and calculated that after tax rebates and such, the 95% will cost the same as the 80%. He scribbled some somewhat cryptic pricing info on the cutsheets that he left with my wife.
So I realize that the furnace I have got is probably the lowest piece of junk that was available at the time due to the fact that the builder seems to be that sort of guy and the original owner also seemed not to care about this stuff. I also assume that the original installer was a total flunkie due to the fact that when I first opened the furnace up after moving in, I found that all the wires were just held together with little pieces of duct tape. No twist, no crimp, no solder, just a couple bare ends and duct tape. Amazing.
Anyway, the guy who visited apparently said that our unit was a recall unit and that we should consider replacing it due to the age, inefficiency and recall status. It is a Goodman GMP125-4 rev B, serial number 0003606520. So I have done a bit of searching online and cannot seem to come up with any verification of this recall status. While I see that the furnace apparently predates the house by about 5 years according to the date on it (makes it 13 years old) and I would be very happy to have a more efficient unit, I still feel like this could be a bit of a con and I don't want to toss a functioning unit for no good reason.
Is there any way that I can verify the recall status or judge the status of my current unit without paying a bunch of other people for loaded second opinions?
Thanks for your input
