Ok, I know there are people FAR smarter than me here and I've seen a very similar project here (albeit more complicated as it used opposing sensors but I cannot find the write up) but this "instructable" looks very interesting and quite inexpensive:

If someone had the knowhow to modify the design so that it didn't just update a status LED and instead sent back data via serial or status bit to something that HS/CQC/whatever could use it looks like it would be almost perfect.
My barrage of motion/occupancy sensors barely cut it
