I can honestly attest to the speed of the SSD's... a few months ago, I had two PC's - both identical laptops; 1 had the original drive, and on the other I ghosted the drive before I ever turned it on over to a 64GB SSD. Then I booted them up and started the normal cleanup process - removing the crap that's loaded from the factory, including office trialware, etc; one PC took 1.5 hours to do all the prep work on; the SSD took about 9 minutes.

It looked like we were about to see the 256GB ones going mainstream around the first of the year, but it seems things have slowed - I'm still not seeing anyone using or offering decent sized drives yet. Ones they hit 256GB under $1K, I'm switching...
