Security recommendation?

I am looking to install a security system in my brothers store. Unfortunately his budget is around $1000. He would like 2 cameras and a security system. It is a small 1000 sq foot card store. He would like 2 door sensors glass break and fire alarm. 1 camera near register and 1 camera near back of store. He would also like to hold off on central station for the 1st year and have a panel that can dial him directly. He will have internet connection at store.

I like the Panasonic IP cameras and I have installed 3 Ademco systems in the past.

I think the budget is low. Can it be done?

Sure it can be done but the quality of the cameras and the capture method will suffer. The DSC security systems are a really good affordable system. There's also a new thread on the HomeSeer message board about a camera system from Costco that a few users really like and it's very affordable as a packaged system.

Thanks for the reply. I will concentrate on the alarm first. Does DSC have the ability to dial out to the user and not central? Would Elk EZ8 have that ability?

I think you'll need a voice module for DSC, just like for Ademco. Otherwise, if a DSC dials you without any voice module, you may hear a number of beeps depending on which zone is violated.

So, as far as I know from the Home Security Store forum, if zone 5 has been violated, you will hear 5 short beeps. If zone 12 has been violated, you'll hear two long beeps + two short beeps. (Long beep = +10; Short beep = 1)

I'm not sure which format to set since I don't have a DSC manual (although DSC's manuals are a bit hard to comprehend than Ademco's manuals. I once read the Vista 20P manual, though.

TLCNORM,
The M1EZ8 does not have voice capability, therefore voice dialing is not enabled. The M1 has the voice capability and can dial your cellphone with various voice messages that can be triggered with Rules.

So does ademco have a voice dialer module? I am thinking of staying with them since I only have experience with them and have found them to be solid performers.
M1 may be above my brothers price point and desires.

My opinion is to list all the features you need and then compare prices for the add ons you would need to have a more apples to apples comparision. By the time you buy all of the additional modules for an Ademco, DSC, Napco panel etc you might be fairly close to the M1. While there is nothing wrong with any of the other mfg's panels keep in mind that none of them are flashable for firmware upgrades etc.

The M1 incorporates a lot of feaures on the main board that the other mfgs require add on modules. The Ademco 4286 is over $100 alone yet all of its features are already included in the M1. The M1 has 16 on board hardwired zones. Most other mfgs have 8 and then you need a zone expander. The M1 has a higher standby current and alarm current then most other panels from these mfg.

If you have the time you might want to do more research on your own and see what the numbers turn out to be.

I have adt in my house... with the iti safewatch caretaker alarm.
Everything is wireless...

so I called them and told them that I want a new alarm. I have no contract so they said they could put one in for free if I renew.. so I asked what alarm..

he said Concord 4. and it will work with ALL of my current sensors minus the wireless keypads...

So guess what is on my garage workbench all configured????

Concord 4!!!!! gonna drop adt and put this puppy in soon...

yes it only has 8 wired zones... but you can hookup multiple items to each zone.... you dont just do 1 door sensor to each hard wired zone.. you can do many...

but I have all wireless..

9 door window sensors
2 glassbreaks
2 smoke detectors
1 water sensor
1 keyfob

and it was easy to program!!!!!
got the alarm off of ebay for $85 shipped... !!!!! since I had everything else but battery and transformer...
my boss bought door window sensors and everything else.. I think he is in about $600....

you can do 6 partitions, 96 wireless zones and 8 hard wired zones

Thanks all for the replies. I am looking for a simple system:

2 door sensors
1 glass break
1 motion
1 keypad

probably wireless....thats it. Very simple. I am sure just about any mfg could work. My big thing is a panel with the ability to dial out to my brother or at least send a text message. I am not clear on what the Ademco dialer does. I believe it is only for dialing in and arming or disarming. I am not sure if it is for notifications.

I was told it is not advisable to do a fire alarm since I am not licensed and insured so I will leave that for the landlord.

You could use NEXTALARM's non central station reporting (direct to your cell phone) with the abn on almost any lower end panel.

OK. Thats probably the way to go. I can't believe there aren't any panels that are simple and affordable and allow some kind of dial out service without monitoring.

Maybe I should just give him my older Ademco and upgrade myself to the ELK...

That would work

I didnt realize you are a fellow Long Islander...... if you are in Nassau and you have Central Station you need a permit but not in Suffolk.

Commercial fire panels in the state of new york have to be listed for use and approved for such use. Wait until your building burns down and see how your insurance company thinks about it.
