SmartHome is now accepting pre-orders for their INSTEON SeriaLinc module.
Connect any Serial- / RS-232-compatible devices to your INSTEON network. From whole-home audio to security systems to automation controllers, you can now keep the equipment you already own AND take advantage of a reliable INSTEON network. SeriaLinc is 2-way serial, meaning it can be used to control RS-232 devices or to control INSTEON devices via RS-232 commands.

MSRP is $149.99, and should be in stock 04/30/2009.

"Control any serial (RS-232) controllable device from any INSTEON controller"

What might this mean?

I searched the code.insteon.net and insteon.net/SDK sites as well as public parts of insteon.net, smartlabs.com and smarthome.com for more information only to find myself re-directed to what purports to be "the product website" but is only the self-same retail advertisement referenced in this article in Cocoontech that has no information or hint as to how the 2410S might actually be programmed to "Control any serial (RS-232) controllable device from any INSTEON controller".

I have a box full of superceded/unsupported INSTEON devices and am not keen to add more.

I tried to get more info, but was pointed to the wiki. However, I can't find anything there either, so I guess we'll have to wait.

Here's the response I received from Smarthome:

"Thank you for your email. Once the SeriaLinc is closer to release date we will have the Quick Start Guide and Owner's Manual available on the product page (http://www.smarthome.com/2410S/SeriaLinc-INSTEON-to-2-Way-RS232-Serial-Converter/p.aspx). "
