Smoke detector

Ionization versus Photoelectric Smoke detector for my M1. I would like to add one in my basement ( I have a gas furnace and gas hot water thank in the basement not sure if that makes a difference) and I would like to add another one in the bedroom hall way. Any suggestions on these devices? I have 4 wire home run being done

Photo with integral thermals would be my recommendation.

Ion is a product of combustion detector, tends to be more false alarm prone in residential (burnt toast, cooking, etc.)

You may want to look at this:

Probably more detail than you need, but helpful to better understand.

A buddy of mine(person who introduced me to the M1) suggestion the below model. Any feedback

Listed for Canada only, also has some inherent issues that I would not care to address for an system smoke detector installation, easier to choose a different model with far more checks in the "pros" line vs. the "cons". Not what I'd consider using for an install...also pretty ugly.

I bought these for my install. They are really quality, have a ring that is installed first with wiring. Then the units twists and locks into place. Real quality. You can pull the unit easily off without having to fiddle with disconnecting wires or quick disconnect (that are always impossible to disconnect, especially when on top of a ladder in some uncomfortable position). System Sensor also has good technical support and lots of training info, and literature on their website.

+1.

System sensor i3 I have used and often seen used in commercial and govt buildings.

Usually in a building of any size, addressible systems are going to be used. Analog conventional systems have really gone the way of the dinosaur.

I am wondering why Elk does not do an addressable system, or add on for the M1G? Anyone knows? It would be nice.

It would also be nice to have separate speaker outputs for areas...

They do offer separate speaker outputs. M1TWA. Other ways to skin the cat in addition to that route.

Addressable systems mean you're stuck with a specific requirement for the SLC and related devices to be installed on them, so a protocol and hardware to interface with would need to be chosen. Then, usually if you're dealing with sounders on the smokes, you'll need more than a pair of conductors at the smoke to trigger them or software, so it really starts to get sticky and complicated. Further complicating matters is the fact that now you're introducing a more proprietary system and narrowing the market, since your panel will only work with X or Y brand detectors or protocols. Where does that put the retrofit or takeover market? Economically, addressable systems cost more per device compared to analog.

That said, I'd prefer to have a module that supports multiple 2 wire fire zones and slightly more inteligence on that side of the panel.
