Speakers recommendations

Hi,
With so many options available having hard time narrowing my selection. Could someone recommend in-wall (main will also be used for music, etc.) and in-ceiling (surround) speakers for use in a home theater setup. Also, is there a way to pendant mount rear speakers so they are behind as opposed to be ceiling mounted? Something like this worth looking at?

Trying to stay reasonable with the $ so $50k speakers are definitely out of the question.

Thanks.

I used all Polk Monitor series speakers in my theater and they sound great and I spent maybe $1500 for 7 channels. None of them, however, are in wall. I soundproofed my theater room so in-wall was out of the question. The presence and rear channels are on the wall mounted.

For my main theatre I am planning to use free standing as well. But there are two other areas in the house I want to put 5.1 in. Since I decided against whole house audio, I am planning to use these for music so kinda kill two birds with one stone.

I use Polk also and they do have some nice in wall speakers so check Polk out. I still have my Polk Monitor 10's that are over 27 years old and sound as good as the day I bought them. I now use Polk Monitor 70's Series II for my mains in my home theater area.

This is what I was looking at:

Not cheap, but doubt I found anything better in this price range. Center channel is more than I expected.

"Under $50K" isn't very specific.

L-C-R are often the same speaker.

Do you want round in-walls? In-walls are usually rectangular. I'm guessing those in-ceilings are for your surround speakers.

$150 for a speaker is pretty inexpensive.

I've used Monoprice for my in-ceiling speakers, for distributed audio.

Haven't gotten to the point of replacing my in-wall L-R speakers and shelf center, for my family room, but I will pay much more than Monoprice for those.

I suggest splurging for the L-C-R, even though it's not your primary setup.

You might be able to get some great deals on 'dealer-only' speakers from an installer. If you have one, ask what lines he carries.

I bet those Polk RT Series are pretty good. I think you'll have to step down to the RC Series if you want to pay wholesale prices. From searching, it appears that RT distribution is much more limited than the RC Series; Polk would do this to protect their dealers.

My budget is between $1k and $2k, hoping to keep it close to $1k. Rectangular in-wall, round in-ceiling. I definitely want better than Monoprice setup, not an audio buff but could appreciate good sound. Polk RT series is not too bad from the price standpoint. Interestingly enough they have a separate model for a center channel that is more expensive that L and R.

Triad, make great inwall speakers.
I have also seen Sonance 622t for front and surrounds L&R
If you can you will want to power them with expensive amps and preamps to do them justice.

I have Proficient Audio in-wall and ceiling speakers throughout my home. I have also installed them in my in-laws home as well as for some friends. I love them, and so has everyone else. They also come with a 10-year warranty, which is certainly a nice benefit.

I am not sure if it would help anyone here, but I also have an extra In-Wall Center for sale (http://www.cocoontech.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17446)

I used a mix for my home multmedia 7.1.

Fronts are: JBL towers

Center: Bose small footprint; nice sound and it fits under the LCD stand such that sound comes out nicely. This is the 4th center speaker in 2 years now as I keep trying different ones. Previous to the Bose was the JBL center speaker.

Center to rear in ceiling mounted 8" Polk speakers

Rear: external generic (6" woofer/tweeter in a metal cabinet - kind of heavy - great sound)

Subwoofer: 15" amplified external in the corner of the room furthest away from the LCD.

The most difficult was placement/installation of the in ceiling mounted speakers.

I mounted a couple of Russound 5" outdoor speakers outside today. Easy to mount and very light plastic based speakers. The mounting bracket is made of of metal. Discreet footprint. Will be testing their sound in the next day or so. The speakers are connected to a Russound CAS44.

Anybody used On-Q speakers before? They don't seem to have in-wall center channel. I have a friend who is a distributor so pricing is very good but I never heard of them. Looks like they have a Cat 5 whole audio system as well.

I have a hunch that the OnQ speakers would be on par with Monoprice. Can you listen to any OnQ speakers before buying them?

Generally, ABus distributed audio systems (catx to the keypad/amp, speaker wire to the speakers) don't perform as well as 'centrally amplified' systems. Search forums for ABus.

thanks

But then again, many people are VERY happy with their ABus systems, and if the house is wired already - that's a no-brainer.

Many manufacturers make ABus systems. I think Nuvo has a new wireless 'Abus' system - local (or central) amplification, wirless distribution of music over wifi.
