What is the proper cable to run for temperature sensors? The wiring 101 guide says cat5 for temp/humidity sensors. Do I also need cat5 for this or should I just run 22/4?
I am running the Elk M1ZTS & ZTSR temp units on 22/4 The runs are between 20' to 105' working fine. Cat5 is overkill (IMO) unless you are planning to put some other sensor in that area.
Cat5 is probably overkill, depending upon your sensor choice, but it may have price advantages over other wire since it is so popular and easy to obtain. Cat5 is a good compromise for flexibility versus price, but as always, YMMV.
I used 22/4 all over. I used it for my door and window sensors too, and lots of other stuff, so the bulk price was pretty low. Definitely lower than cat5.
22/4 or 18/4 will work fine. I ran 22/4 for mine which is about 50 feet from the panel. If you have a longer run you can call elk and they will help you recalibrate the TS to compensate for voltage drop issues. You should be fine.
