The Closing of the Year

It might seem a bit premature but for many of us the end of the Christmas shopping season effectively closes the window on buying new gadgets and toys for this year. For many of us the "New Year" for HA buying doesn't start until after the April 15th tax cycle so there is planty of time to reflect on what we were, and were not able to buy in 2007, and to start making our wish list for Summer 2008.

Some long awaited stuff did get released in 2007. Highlights include:

UPB Gen II switches (this was a huge improvement for UPB!)
Cooper Z-wave switches
Insteon RF remotes
Insteon SocketLincs and OutletLincs
An Insteon touch screen
The XTB-IIR X10 transmit booster/repeater (why can't the big companies make something this good?)
Sage HD Extenders (but I still can't figure out how you play a blu-ray disc though one)
New versions of PowerHome, VCrib, Zspeak and many other updates in software and firmware.
And lots of other good stuff.

Of course there are the things promised for this year that didn't make it out:

An Insteon thermostat
Homeseer HSTouch software
Insteon RELAY KeypadLincs
HAI e series Touch Screens
An Insteon PLM capable of more than 417 links
The Universal Devices ISY-99i (with IR to Insteon translation)
etc. etc.

The interesting thing to see each year is how many of the things that are at the very top of my wish list at the end of the year are either moved way down or even dropped completely over the course of the 4 month "dry spell" before I can buy stuff again. I wonder what new HA ideas or products will grab my attention though the Winter and what direction they will take me in next Summer?

Price drops are also interesting to see - 58" 720p plasmas are down to $2200. 1080p sets are still $4K or so for the 50" ones, but I too am very interested in the price drops between now->3/15 (i get my bonus *and* tax refund).

My elitist wife who used to do market research tracking the plasma industry will only let me get one of the tier 1 brands (Panasonic, Samsung, or Pioneer).

What is "tier 1"? I assume 'top of the line' or is is more complicated then that?

Sounds like a ploy to keep them out of your reach.... ;)
