The OS Wars

Microsoft is the BORG...

Unfortuneatly, I have to use MS because it is the most widely used OS. Too many app and other issues with the Open source OS's.

UGH....

i had gotten used to very cheap xp pro licenses i got from my friend who works @ microsoft, but they no longer sell xp @ their employee store. lately, i've been building pcs for my family with vista basic, which my friend gets for $5 each  easier to do that than teach my Mom how to use linux.

i've got a variety of OSs running in my house: HA server & laptop running xp, 2 old machines w/ win2k, 1 running server 2008, 2 old (600 & 700mhz p3) laptops running puppy linux, linspire running on an acer aspire one netbook, mandrake linux running on a recently decommissioned firewall/web server and 1 machine running vista basic.

I have 8 paid for copies of Windows XP and 3 Win2000, I have four touchscreens running all the time with Windows on them plus my SageTV server and my Home Automation server also run 24/7, I am using my laptop now so that is 7 computers running at the same time. I don't see a problem with paying Microsoft for every copy I use.

So at about $189 ea you've got around 2K in Windows? You might want to pay the $10 fee at the courthouse and get a business name so you can get a site license....

I don't pay anywhere near $189 each. I think I paid about $115 for MCE2005, $130 for XP pro and $85 for XP home but yes I have spent a lot on windows. I build most of my computers myself and buy OEM versions of Windows, the Laptop and three of the touchscreens came with Windows installed on them already.

I like Windows, 2000 and XP have been rock solid for me. The newer versions of Ubuntu that I have tried have been pretty nice also.

I just purchased an Eee Box for under $300 delivered and it came with XP Home installed on it. If XP is really worth $85 then that means I paid less than $215 for my new PC hardware. This discussion is making me feel pretty good about my latest PC purchase!

I bought my OEM copies from PC Club, I would imagine big companies that sell PCs get Windows at a much better price then I can. I don't think $85 is too bad a price for an OS.

I also use XP Pro on all PC's. Still to soon to go to Vista and with Windoes Seven on the horizon I'll probably skip Vista.

Vista almost seems like the Windows ME of current. I haven't used it much and don't plan to unless the work oriented software that I deal with relies on it.

What, no FreeBSD users here on Cocoon.tech ..

I have 3 FreeBSD machines running 24/7..gateway, public servers (jailed nameservers, mail, www, ftp), and one for internal servers (samba (nfs), www) that I also use as a desktop..

.. I use Windows (XP, reluctantly) for my HA machine (running HomeSeer) and for the wife and kids desktops, as the "but that's not the same as the computer at school/work , why is it different?" question are just too much with them running anything else (I have tried

I do have them using OpenOffice, Firefox, Gimp, etc, and use FOSS wherever I can..

and while I have few problems with XPs stability (I don't 'do' much on the HA machine) it does still hang once in a while, my FreeBSD machines are only down when I take them down..

I use WinXP at work..it's what the boss gives me, and the industry standard software in my line of work, AutoCAD, is required for doing my job..

So I guess you have to go with what works, but when there is an option, I prefer open source..

1 BSD (m0n0wall)
2 CentOS
2 Windows 2003 Server
6 XP Pro
1 CE5
1 WM2003SE
1 QNX

And not a single problem

Vista... 2 machines
Not a single problem.

I had vista on 2 machines for about a year with few problems that weren't 'lack of driver' related.

One day all network stopped working though, and I haven't touched it since.

I run:

- OS X on 3 machines (2 desktops and a laptop)
- Linux on 1 machine for Mythtv
- XP Pro in 1 virtual machine (Poor thing does not even get its own hardware)

Lets see

1 windows 3.1 box
2 windows 98
1 windows 2000
2 xp laptop
7 xp
1 vista laptop
1 vista
2 osx
1 xp/vista/osx

and I'll soon have my first linux box up and running (finally got off my arse)

You just got to get to them soon enough. My 5 and 8 year old can run Linux desktops just fine and even like the simple games that tend to come with KDE and other WM's.
