Hi guys,

Whats up? im totally new to this home automation and such, ive just recently bought a house that was built in 1986, so its gonna need some rewiring. I also have an apple iphone, so what im looking to be able to do is turn lights on and off, lock and unlock the front door and im sure theres more that i would like to do but thats all i can think of right now..

Im wondering if you guys can help me out on choosing what items i need or should get and how i should set it up and whatever lol idk really what all i need.. thanks for the help guys

I do exactly what you want to do using HomeSeer to control my lights via my iPhone and the new HSTouch. The locks I use are the new Schlage Z-Wave lock I bought at HomeSeer.com here:
http://homeseer.com/
So I setup my Z-Wave switches, and locks and then designed a few screens in HSTouch which alerts me at night if my doors are locked or not over the whole house audio. If you have any other question just ask away.

Insteon can do these things, except that I understand that the door unlock thing may be a bit rough. I think I saw a Z-wave door system. I assume Z-wave can do what you want, but don't have any experience with this. Many speak of UPB, but I have heard of no door mechanism. Maybe others can correct me if I am wrong.

If you want to consider insteon further, you are looking at some type of controller (smartlinc comes to mind. I use the ISY-99 and it would work well, also. Smartlinc is less expensive and arguably less capable.) You will need a device (module, switch) for any light you want to control. You will most likely need a way to communicate between power phases in your house (access points seems to be the common method). There are a couple of starter kits built around the smartlinc. Check those out at smarthome.

thanks for the fast replys guys!

would you be able to send me some links for the products you used, i cant seem to find them. thanks

ok thanks, you had to buy the software also right? and for the door lock do you have to pay the 12.99 monthly fee?
If you are using HomeSeer, there are no monthly fees required. You should download a 30 day trial and give the software a whirl.

Lousi, welcome to CT!

There are TONS of solutions out there, so please take your time to research this.

AutomateIt/NewAutomationUser/Rupp/Automation, can you please explain why all your accounts are posting from the same IP address? The fact that all these accounts are pushing Homeseer so hard, and that Rupp (nothing against Rupp, but we all know how much he likes HS :() is associated with that IP address makes me wonder about what is going on here.

Looks like they point to Rupp's e-mail accounts too. This isn't looking good :/
