7" touch display, running Windows CE so that you can RDP back to your home server, or just use a web app.

The 499 model looks like it could easily be embedded into a wall and powered by 18-2 + cat5

anyone aware of a better solution? I need about 5 of something like this for a house I am building.

Not bad at all, it should also be able to run ElkRM if you have an M1 installed with the M1XEP module, or some of the other HA UI apps supporting CE (NetRemote, etc.). I personally have the Elk TS07 unit, which has similar specifications.

yes, it does look similar to the elk ts07, but comes in at half, to 1/rd of the price. Over the 5 or so units I need to buy for the house I'm building, that's going to add up to $3000-4000 of cost savings, which is quite significant.

anyone else seen an in-wall solution at this price point (sub 500)

As far as the install, MavRic, my current touchscreen setup is on a wall with a closet directly behind in it. I have a screen on the wall and a laptop in the closet. Makes for a very easy install...

Then again, I live alone, so I don't have to worry about stealing closet space away from someone ;-)

Can you use multiple remote desktops from different devices to the same destination (i.e. the server)? Would they all be seeing the same thing or are they all their own sessions? Can each run at a different resolution?

I'm used to VNC and have used regular windows remote desktop before, but have never used it with multiple clients at the same time.

Yes - RDP is Remote Desktop Protocol

All depends. RDP to a windows workstation only allows one connection and it takes control away from the local machine. (unlike VNC where both work) There are things like nComputing clients (check out Touchtronix.com for slick but overpriced in-wall clients) that'll let you spread up to 10 workstations I believe on a standard XP computer - cost is pretty low, performance is decent - but, doesn't do high-res color. If you're running Windows Server, you get 2 administrative connections that are totally independent and separate from the console session. You can buy Terminal Services licenses if you want (no way to fake it - it's a separate key you buy for the exact number of workstations) that'll give you as many connections as you can afford. A tiny bit of lag - minimal depending on your network, but tends to relay sound and supports high color.

Third option is a single PC with multiple video out's - extended via a VGA over Cat5 extender - they tend to support video and serial (for touch-screen control) over a single cat 5 and have excellent performance... I'm using one in my living room.

Isn't RDP the one that installs something into the OS that cannot be uninstalled if it causes a problem (irreversible change)? That alone would make me want to favor VNC, or Kavoom, or pretty much anything besides RDP.
