If all goes well and these sensors work then i,ll experiment with my spare units and try and make a wireless sensor (interfacing to ds10 type sensor) as i would prefer to use wireless moisture sensors for my garden beds....
Just finished installing the Vegetronix sensors in my Vegie Patch....
My test Vegetronix probe has been working fine and i can see that as the pot slowly drys out the voltage from the probe is slowly dropping off...(Unlike my homebrew i was getting the odd strange reading)......I mentioned in a previous post that the test probe voltage maxed at 2.2v approx...I contacted Vegetronix and they assured me once the probe was immersed in saturated soil that it would read 2.9v ....
Once i installed all 6 sensors i did some voltage readings and sure enough 2 of the probes were reading over 2.9v... (we had 45mm rain this weekend pass).........
One thing i did like about my Homebrew attempt was the led indicator on the Probe.....I considered making an led indicator box showing all 6 zones but decided to mount them locally at each zone...see link below for pics....Im reasonably confident these sensors are going to work..just need to monitor and tweak over the next few weeks....

Do have a PC board shop in your basement? Ive noticed alot of nice looking projects from you all with specific designed PCB's which Im sure helps keep things nice and neat...
No basement no pc board shop ....Have spent a small fortune on pcbs over the years and as you say it does make it neat ....I no longer enjoy using veroboard and only use it when i have to...
Havent given up on the wireless moisture sensor...But got slightly side tracked...Im working on a handheld Moisture Probe which uses the Vegetronix vg400 moisture sensor and displays the raw data on a Sparkfun serial lcd....
I have also got a Vegetronix vg400 connected to RFXCOM Sensor which has an analog input... 0 to 10v....Using the RF receiver software its reading ok on reset but when reports normally its reporting much lower ..The analog power gets turned on only when reporting so i assume the reset much turn it on for longer...Might have to connect the analog power directly to the 9v battery...
Currently only the temp sensor + battery voltage of the RFXCOM Sensor are reporting to xPL once i get the analog input reporting i,ll install it in the garden and report back how its going...
