VGA to RCA Composite

What is the cheapest method to go VGA to RCA Composite?

Just trying to test something, so I don't want to invest a LOT of $$ upfront, at least until I have a proof of concept.

Would love to know that one myself, been looking for a solution that is affordable and good quality for ages :P

Michael posted this over at the Homeseer forums:

I guess I have to spend the $$ on it. I just didn't want to invest in anything until I knew what I was trying to do...well, would work!

Maybe one of my laptops has S-Video output. That's only a few $$ to make composite from S-Video.

I'm trying to see if I can stream the VGA output from a PC to my mobile phone. I think I can do it like this:

VGA->Composite->RF-Modulator->ATI-TV Card->VFW object->VLC->Mobile Phone
Or
Antenna->Digital Tuner Box->Composite->RF-Modulator->ATI-TV Card->VFW object->VLC->Mobile Phone

I have the VLC to Mobile phone part working.

I know, slingbox, etc. I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible (more an Exercise / Experiment).

I already have the TV Tuner (Not sure if it works, so I'll need to test it out), already have the RF Modulator (works). Just trying to see if I can actually make this work.

I suppose my first step should be test the TV card. If it doesn't work, then this whole experiment is kind of MOOT.

I have used similar devices in the past, and while they work 'ok' for temporary installs, I wasn't too impressed with the quality. Let me know how this works out.

Years ago I would stream Tivo to the network. Its still kind of set up but I don't really utilize it anymore - it was a bit propietary but it let me change channels etc. The web interface was an all in one which allowed me all of the functions of the remote control.

Years ago (or more) played with a couple of OTA/in-house video cards / applications which did similiar allowing for streaming video and total control of the tuner card. The programs were free with numerous free plugins which allowed network broadcasts (generic) over the network. Why re-invent the wheel; give some these a try. The streaming worked in a similiar fashion to the above mentioned Tivo applications allowing full remote control of the streaming video. Some of these were very flexible allowing you to design your screens/remote control buttons (like for your phone). Adjust the frame rate/codec etc. These were out there in the early days of the Intel P4's and actually were utilized to benchmark on the fly transcoding wars between AMD and Intel. Today they would probably run a bit faster and more efficiently.

Before the in-cpu video processing I was utilizing Canopus ADVC-100/ADVC-50's with "video" firewire cards. Just looked and I still have a computer with a Canopus ADVC-50 / firewire card setup (although it hasn't been turned on in a few years).

It was the best in its time and streamed well but a bit expensive.

Thanks for the incite all, my brother was able to give me an ATI All in Wonder card. It has Coax in and Composite out...so, I can test everything I want with this and my Composite to RF box.

Gotta like freeer for testing!
