What part makes HAI OP2 speak to Z-Wave?

Jay from Smarthome-products called me back already, the part is: https://www.smarthome-products.com/p-802-vizia-rf-vrc0p-1lw-plug-in-serial-interface-module-rs232-ascii-interface.aspx

:)

That's what I use. Older one now for a couple of years. Works fine with the OPII panel. BTW I have no issues with the panel speaking X10, UPB and Z-Wave.

To test Z-Wave RF I put it behind a bunch of conduit and started the small Z-Wave lighting / appliance module set up from the furthest point in the home and it worked just fine. I do not look at the logging nor propagation; just that the modules are working with little or any noticible delays.

One of the things that I would do to program it was unplug it from the HAI OPII box. It didn't work right with the serial cable from the panel was plugged in. I don't know about the most current revision of the PIM whether there is a similiar issue.

Thanks for the tip Pete, I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully the newest versions don't have that issue!

Side note: I started researching this yesterday, received a call from Jay at Smarthome-products very quickly, paid for the product, and already received shipping confirmation.

I'll be doing business with that company again.

Turns out I should have bought the z-troller and planned on using homeseer, but Jay once again came through. He's giving me a refund on the other part and shipping the z-troller today.

Again, I can't say enough about the service from this company. 5stars OR MORE. *****

Why did you trade the VRCop for ZTroller and why use Homeseer instead of OP2? Just curious.

As far as I know there's no way to introduce hardware (like an rf+ light switch, lock, or outlet) to the system with only the OPII and VRC0P. Jay said I need the z-troller to make them all speak and recognize each other, and that made sense to me.

He also said he's a programmer and he opted to use homeseer as a base for his home automation, and I've read a lot of good reviews on homeseer... I guess I'm just taking a leap of faith based on the above items. :)

HAI OPII is a security system with home automation. It uses VRC0P to interface with z-wave network. In order to include VRC0P (and any other z-wave device), you need a controller. It could be z-troller or any other primary controller. I don't know what you're referring to by "homeseer" - the company makes many products. They do make automation software that can control z-wave devices, and I think Insteon and others. You can run trial version of homeseer software when you get z-troller and see if it does something that OPII doesn't do. If you want a security panel, homeseer won't help you. You need OPII or a dedicated security panel. If all you want is home automation, you can pick either - whatever you like better.
